Robert Leland Eubanks (born January 8, 1938) is an American disc jockey, television personality, and game show host. He is best known for hosting the game show The Newlywed Game since 1966. He also hosted a popular version of Card Sharks from 1986 to 1989. In 2000, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his radio work. In 2005, he was given a lifetime achievement Emmy Award for his work in television.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Eubanks was born in Flint, Michigan, but grew up mostly in Pasadena, California. As a child, he enjoyed listening to music and watching classic television and game shows. He even worked as a child model, which allowed him to meet his idol, Gene Autry.

After graduating from Pasadena High School in 1955, Eubanks started his career in radio. In 1956, he worked at his first radio station, KACY in Oxnard, California. By 1960, he joined KRLA in Pasadena, becoming a popular disc jockey.

Music Promoter and Family Life

During the 1960s, Eubanks also became a successful concert promoter. He helped bring famous bands like The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl in 1964 and 1965. He also promoted concerts for artists such as The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, and Elton John.

Eubanks married Irma Barnard in 1969. They had three children: Trace, Corey, and Theresa. The family enjoyed outdoor activities like roping and riding. Irma passed away in 2002. In 2004, Eubanks married Deborah James, and they have a son named Noah.

Hosting Game Shows

In 1966, Chuck Barris asked Eubanks to host a new game show called The Newlywed Game. The show became an instant hit. Eubanks, who was only 28, brought a fun and energetic style to daytime television. He was known for asking questions that led to funny and sometimes embarrassing answers from the contestants.

The Newlywed Game was very popular, ranking as one of the top game shows for many years. Eubanks hosted the show for its original run until 1974, and then for several later versions in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. He even hosted special celebrity episodes in the 2000s and 2010s, making him the only person to host the same game show in six different decades.

Other Game Show Appearances

After The Newlywed Game, Eubanks hosted many other game shows. These included Rhyme and Reason, Dream House, and Trivia Trap.

In 1985, he was chosen to host a new version of Card Sharks for CBS. He hosted Card Sharks from 1986 until 1989. He also hosted specials like Most Outrageous Game Show Moments for NBC. For a time, he was one of the rotating hosts for the "$250,000 Game Show Spectacular" in Las Vegas.

Eubanks also worked behind the scenes, producing other game shows like The Guinness Game. He even hosted a British version of a show called Infatuation UK.

Radio and Other Appearances

Before his game show career, Eubanks was a very popular radio DJ at KRLA 1110 in Los Angeles. He was also a music promoter and manager for artists like Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard. He even filled in for Casey Kasem on the radio show American Top 40 a couple of times.

Eubanks has made many other television appearances. He hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant in 1964. He also appeared in TV shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and That '70s Show. In 1992, he had a cameo in the movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

For many years, Eubanks co-hosted the Tournament of Roses Parade on Los Angeles television channel KTLA. He hosted it from 1976 until 2016, often with Stephanie Edwards.

In recent years, Eubanks has continued to make appearances. He was a "Mob Member" on the game show 1 vs. 100 in 2007. In 2010, he appeared on The Amazing Race 17 finale. His autobiography, It's in the Book, Bob, was published in 2004. In 2023, he was featured in an ABC News documentary about the history of game shows called The Game Show Show.
