Boban Babunski (born May 5, 1968) is a former professional football player from North Macedonia. He played as a central defender, which is a key position in the middle of the defense. After his playing days, he became a football coach.
Playing Career
Boban Babunski was born in Skopje, which is now the capital of North Macedonia. He started his football journey with his hometown club, FK Vardar. He played there for many years.
After leaving Vardar, he moved to Bulgaria to play for CSKA Sofia. He was one of the first players from Macedonia to compete in the top Bulgarian football league.
Later, Boban played two seasons in Spain for Lleida. He then spent time in Japan playing for Gamba Osaka.
Boban Babunski stopped playing professionally in 2001 when he was 33 years old. Before retiring, he played for several other clubs. These included AEK Athens in Greece, Logroñés in Spain, Sint-Truiden in Belgium, and Chemnitzer FC in Germany. He also played for FK Rabotnichki in his home country.
International Matches
Boban Babunski played two matches for the Yugoslavia national team in 1991. After North Macedonia became an independent country, he joined their new national team. He played 23 matches for the Macedonia national team and scored one goal.
Coaching Days
After his playing career, Boban Babunski started coaching. He began as an assistant coach for the Macedonian national team.
In 2005, he became the temporary manager of the national team. Later, he took on a permanent coaching role.
In 2009, Babunski became the head coach of FK Rabotnichki, a club from Skopje. During his time there, his team won the Macedonian Cup, which is a major football competition in North Macedonia. He later returned to coach the national team again.
Family Life
Boban Babunski comes from a football family! His two sons, David and Dorian, are also professional footballers. David played youth football for FC Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Dorian also played for another famous club, Real Madrid, when he was younger.
Boban's great-grandfather was Jovan Babunski, a leader known as a vojvoda.
