José Roberto Pulido Jr. (born April 25, 1971), known as Bobby Pulido, is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor. He is famous for bringing Tejano music to young people. He became a teen idol and one of the most important Tejano artists for Mexican-American teenagers.

In 1995, Pulido started his music career with his own band. He signed a record deal with EMI Latin and released his first album, Desvelado. This album reached number nine on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. It also hit number three on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. The album was certified platinum, meaning it sold 100,000 copies. The song "Desvelado" made Pulido a popular Tejano singer.

Pulido's album Enséñame (1996) reached number two on the Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. He was nominated for awards like the Tejano Music Award for Male Entertainer of the Year. In 1998, Pulido performed a sold-out show in Monterrey, Mexico. He was the first Tejano artist to do this. In 1999, he received the Orgullo de la Frontera award. He won Male Entertainer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards for three years in a row. Around 2000, Tejano music became less popular. This meant Pulido's newer albums did not do as well on the music charts.

In 2003, Pulido started acting. He played the main role in the TV movie La Decada Furiosa. He also appeared in TV shows called telenovelas, like Fuego en La Sangre. His album Enfermo de Amor (2007) did not sell well. After this, he took a three-year break from music. He returned in 2010 with the album Dias de Ayer. At the same time, Pulido continued acting in the film Noches Con Platanito. In 2024, Pulido announced he would go on a farewell music tour. After this, he plans to run for a public office in Texas.

Bobby Pulido's Life and Career

Early Life and Music Start (1971–1994)

Jose Roberto Pulido Jr. was born on April 25, 1971, in Edinburg, Texas. His father, Roberto Pulido, is a famous Tejano music singer. His mother, Diana Montez, is the daughter of norteño musician Mario Montez. Bobby Pulido went to Edinburg High School. He was part of the school's mariachi band. Later, he joined his father's band, Los Clásicos. He played the saxophone and sang backup.

In 1994, EMI Latin released an album called Branding Icons. It featured a song called "Contigo" by Bobby and his father. Pulido was accepted into St. Mary's University. He studied business management. After the album came out, Pulido decided to leave college. He started a singing career during the popular time for Tejano music.

First Album and Success (1995–1999)

Pulido formed his own band. It included Gilbert Trejo (guitar), Mike Fox (bass), Jimmy Montez (drums), Rey Gutierrez (keyboard), and Frank Caballero (accordion). Some Tejano musicians first thought Pulido was only famous because of his father.

In May 1995, Pulido signed a deal with EMI Latin. His first album, Desvelado, came out in September. The head of EMI Latin, Jose Behar, thought Pulido would do well in the country music market. His first song, "No Se Por Que," reached number 33 on the US Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart in December 1995.

Desvelado started at number 44 on the Top Latin Albums chart. The song "Desvelado" became very popular, reaching number 21. This made Pulido one of the most popular Tejano artists. In April 1996, the album reached number nine on the Top Latin Albums chart. It also hit number three on the Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. Billboard called Pulido a "fast-rising artist." The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This meant it shipped 100,000 copies in the US. By the end of 1996, Pulido was the eighth best-selling regional Mexican artist. Desvelado was the eleventh best-selling regional Mexican album. By 1999, the album had sold 100,000 copies. At the 1996 Tejano Music Awards, Pulido won Best New Rising Male Tejano Artist.

In July 1996, Pulido married Eliza Anzaldua. He took a short break from music. His second album, Enséñame, was released a month after his wedding. Billboard described Enséñame as a ranchera album with catchy cumbia parts. They thought Pulido wanted to be like Emilio Navaira, who tried to sing country music. Ramiro Burr of the San Antonio Express-News said Pulido's singing had gotten much better.

Enséñame reached number ten on the Top Latin Albums chart. It also hit number two on the Regional Mexican Albums charts. Three songs from the album, "Enséñame," "Se Murió De Amor," and "La Rosa," reached the top 20 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. The album earned Pulido nominations for awards. These included the Tejano Music Award for Male Entertainer of the Year. In 1997, Pulido helped sing "Viviras Selena" for the soundtrack of the movie about Selena. Selena was a famous Tejano singer who passed away in 1995. By 1997, Pulido was known for bringing Tejano music to younger people in the US.

In 1998, Pulido released his third album, Llegaste a Mi Vida. It reached number two on the Regional Mexican Albums chart. It also hit number eleven on the Top Latin Albums chart. The song "Pedire" reached number 28 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Llegaste a Mi Vida earned Pulido five awards at the 1998 Tejano Music Awards. He won Male Vocalist of the Year and Male Entertainer of the Year. He also won Tejano Crossover Song of the Year for "¿Dónde Estás?" and Tejano Album of the Year. In 1998, both Desvelado and Llegaste a Mi Vida sold 100,000 copies in Mexico. This was a big achievement for him.

In September 1998, Pulido released his first live album, En Vivo: Desde Monterrey Mexico. It was recorded on April 24, 1998. This album became his fourth top-ten recording in the US. It reached number 21 on the Top Latin Albums chart. Pulido performed a sold-out concert at the Auditorio Coca-Cola in Monterrey. He was the first Tejano grupo musician to do this. In March 1999, he released his fourth album, El Cazador. This album had the song "Cantarle a Ella," which reached the top thirty on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. In February 1999, Pulido received the Orgullo de la Frontera award. He was the youngest person to get this award. In April 1999, Pulido said he wanted to record a Latin pop album. He stated he was not interested in singing English-language albums.

Career Changes and Acting (2000–2009)

By 2000, Tejano music was becoming less popular. However, singers like Pulido, Emilio Navaira, and Selena were still very popular on US radio. Pulido became a teen idol for Mexican-American teenage girls. He was one of the most important Tejano artists for them. In March 2000, Pulido released Zona de Peligro. This album did not sell as well as his earlier work. None of its songs were big hits. However, Pulido still won the Tejano Music Award for Male Entertainer of the Year for the third time in a row.

Pulido released his sixth album, Siempre Pensando En Ti, in March 2001. It did not sell very well. It reached number 50 on the Top Latin Albums chart. This was Pulido's last album to appear on a Billboard music chart for a while. In 2002, Pulido organized the Celebrity Golf Classic. This event raised $50,000 for the Easter Seals program. The mayor of McAllen announced that November 2, 2002, would be "Bobby Pulido Day."

Pulido released his album, Bobby, which included the top 40 US song "Vanidosa." He also recorded a cover version of Juan Gabriel's song "Se Me Olvidó Otra Vez" for Bobby. His next albums, Montame (2003) and Vive (2005), did not appear on the charts. This ended his eight-year run on Billboard. In 2003, Pulido started acting in the telenovela TV movie La Decada Furiosa. He played himself in the movie. Two years later, he was a guest on the reality television show Big Brother México. Pulido performed "Ya Ves" for the live TV concert Selena ¡VIVE! in April 2005. His album Enfermo de Amor was released in August 2007. After this album, Pulido appeared in three episodes of the telenovela Fuego en La Sangre.

In November 2015, Pulido released "No Es Como Tú." This song was from his twelfth album, Hoy. This album was special because Pulido wrote all the songs himself. Pulido said that Hoy would be released in a way to "help fight the war" against downloading and music streaming. He was against music piracy. The album was expected to be released only through Pulido's social networking sites. In a May 2016 concert, Pulido sang "Si No Te Hubiera Conocido." This was a song he recorded with Miguel Luna that was not released earlier. At the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards, Pulido won Best Tejano Album. He won for his album, Para Que Baile Mi Pueblo (2021).

In November 2024, Pulido announced he would stop making music. He plans to start a farewell tour in January 2025. After that, he wants to work in politics and run for public office in Texas.
