History of Bonanza

How Bonanza Started

The story of Bonanza began in 1880. A man named Tom Cooke from Salida was looking for horses. Instead, he found valuable ore deposits in the ground. This discovery quickly attracted many prospectors, who are people who search for minerals. Soon, the town of Bonanza City was founded.

A Booming Mining Town

In its first two years, Bonanza City grew very fast. Its population jumped to between 1,000 and 1,500 people. Back then, people often guessed a mining town's size by how many saloons (places to drink) and dance halls it had. Bonanza City was quite lively, with 36 saloons and 7 dance halls. This shows how many people came hoping to find silver and get rich.
