What's in a Name?
The name Bookabie was first used for a town that was planned in July 1890. It was officially named by Governor Kintore on August 27, 1891.
A journalist named Daisy Bates wrote that the name comes from an Aboriginal word. This word means "bad water." Local Aboriginal people used this name for a waterhole near the town.
Bookabie's Location and Land Use
The area known as the Bookabie locality includes a part of the coastline that faces the Great Australian Bight. This includes the eastern side of Fowlers Bay and its eastern headland.
The Eyre Highway, a major road, runs through the Bookabie locality from east to west. Most of the land in Bookabie is used for agriculture, which means farming. The land along the coastline in the south is set aside for conservation, which means protecting nature.
Population of Bookabie
According to the 2016 Australian census, which counted people in August 2016, the localities of Bookabie and Penong together had a population of 289 people.
