Border Junction, also known as Border, is a small place in the far western part of Lincoln County, Wyoming, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it is a group of homes and buildings that are part of the county, rather than having its own city government. Border Junction is also a very important spot where several roads meet, making it a key intersection for travelers.

Roads and Travel

Border Junction is a busy spot where different roads come together. The main road here is US Route 30. This highway helps people travel northwest to Montpelier, Idaho, and southeast to Cokeville, Wyoming.

Another important road is Wyoming Highway 89. It runs north towards US Route 89 and also goes southeast, sharing the path with US Route 30 for a bit. There's also a smaller road, Lincoln County Road 134, which goes south to some homes and ranches. The Union Pacific Railroad also passes through Border Junction, connecting places like Rock Springs to the east and Pocatello, Idaho, to the west.

Nature and Location

Border Junction is located in a beautiful area. It sits about 6,115 feet (1,864 meters) above sea level. This is roughly a quarter-mile (0.4 kilometers) east of the border between Wyoming and Idaho.

The area is part of the Thomas Fork valley, which is near the Bear River. To the west of Border Junction, you can see the Sublette Mountains. These mountains are part of a larger area called the Southern Wyoming Overthrust Belt.

Every year, in September and October, something amazing happens here. About 5,000 sandhill cranes fly through the Border Junction area as they migrate. It's a spectacular sight to see these large birds.

A Glimpse into the Past

Border Junction has a rich history, especially related to old travel routes. The Overland Stage Route once passed through this area. This was a famous path used by stagecoaches and travelers in the past. It came north to Border Junction from Fort Bridger, going through places like Cokeville, Sage, and Lyman.

Long ago, people traveling by wagon had to cross the Thomas Fork river. They used a special toll bridge located west of Border Junction. Even today, you can still see the marks left by these old wagons. These "wagon ruts" are visible on the ridges, showing where pioneers traveled many years ago.
