The Bou Regreg (Arabic: أبو رقراق) is an important river in western Morocco. It flows into the huge Atlantic Ocean. This happens right between the famous cities of Rabat and Salé. The place where the river meets the ocean is called an estuary. It is also known as Wadi Sala.

This river is about 240 kilometres (149 miles) long. Its estuary stretches inland for about 24 kilometres (15 miles). The river's average flow is 23 cubic meters per second. But during heavy floods, it can flow much faster. The Bou Regreg starts high up in the Middle Atlas mountains. Its source is at an altitude of 1627 meters (5338 feet). This is near Jbel Mtourzgane and Grou.

Why is Water Quality Important in the Bou Regreg?

Keeping the water clean in the Bou Regreg river is very important. Sometimes, ocean saltwater can push far up the river. This is called tidal saltwater intrusion. It can affect plants and animals that live in freshwater.

Another issue is too much nitrates. These chemicals come from farms when water runs off the land. Also, some pesticides used in the area can cause mercury pollution. All these things can harm the river's environment.

What is the History of the Bou Regreg River?

The Bou Regreg river has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, people from Phoenicia and Carthage lived along its banks. They built settlements about two kilometers from where the river meets the ocean. This ancient place is known as Chellah.

Ancient Chellah: A Roman City

Chellah was once a busy port city. It later became a Roman town called Sala Colonia. The famous geographer Ptolemy even mentioned it as Sala. Today, you can still see the ruins of this old city.

These ruins include the main road, called the Decumanus Maximus. There was also a public square, known as a forum. You can find remains of a large fountain and a triumphal arch. These structures show how important Chellah was in ancient times.
