History of Boulevard
Early Inhabitants and Native American Culture
Long ago, the Kumeyaay and Cocopah Native American tribes were the first people to live in the Boulevard area. This region is very important for its rich Native American history, culture, and ancient sites.
Today, Boulevard is home to the main office for the Manzanita Band of Diegueno Mission Indians. This shows the continued importance of Native American heritage in the area.
A Famous Zeppelin Landing
Near a place called Calexico Lodge, there's an area sometimes called Eckener Pass. This name comes from a famous German airship (Zeppelin) pioneer named Hugo Eckener.
In August 1929, a huge Zeppelin called the "Graf Zeppelin" landed here. It was on a trip around the world, flying from Los Angeles to Chicago. Imagine seeing a giant airship land in your town!
How Boulevard Got Its Name
The town and its post office were named "Boulevard" because of US Highway 80. This important highway used to run right through the town.
Later, a new, bigger highway called Interstate 8 was built. It went around the town, so Boulevard became a bit quieter.
Some local people have another story about the name. They say Boulevard used to be a stop for stagecoaches. After climbing winding mountain roads, this stop was the first long, flat, straight road they reached. It felt like a "boulevard" after all those twists and turns!
La Posta Casino
In 2007, the La Posta Casino opened in Boulevard. It was owned and run by the La Posta Band of Mission Indians. It was the smallest casino in the county. However, it closed in 2012 because of money problems.
