Bounnhang Vorachit (born August 15, 1937) is a well-known politician from Laos. He served as the top leader of Laos, holding the titles of General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of Laos, from 2016 to 2021.

Early Life and Military Service

Bounnhang Vorachit joined the Pathet Lao movement in 1951. This group was fighting for Laos's independence. He worked in the propaganda department, sharing information with the public in Savannakhet.

In 1956, he moved to the fighting troops. He went to Vietnam to study from 1958 to 1961. After his studies, he returned to Laos. He helped prepare for important military actions, like the one in Luang Namtha Province.

After a victory in Luang Namtha in 1962, he went back to Vietnam. There, he studied at a military college. In 1964, he returned to Laos again.

In 1969, he became the head of the organizing committee for Xieng Khuang province. He later became a Deputy Commander in Luang Prabang Province in 1972. He also joined a coalition government there in 1974. He became the party secretary for the defense forces in Luang Prabang.

By 1976, he was a political leader for the armed forces in the northern part of Laos. He went back to Vietnam in 1978 to study political ideas. In 1981, he became a political leader for the armed forces once more. From 1981 to 1991, he also served as the Governor of Savannakhet Province.

Political Career Highlights

Bounnhang Vorachit began his journey in high-level politics in 1996. He became a Deputy Prime Minister. He held this role until 2001.

During this time, he also led the Lao-Vietnamese Cooperation Committee from 1996 to 1999. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the Minister of Finance. This meant he was in charge of the country's money matters.

On March 26, 2001, he was chosen as the Prime Minister of Laos. He served in this important role until June 8, 2006. After that, Bouasone Bouphavanh took over as Prime Minister.

Bounnhang Vorachit then became the Vice President of Laos on June 8, 2006. He was the deputy to then-President Choummaly Sayasone. His strong connections with Vietnam were well-known. He had received military training and studied political ideas there.

At the 10th Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party on January 22, 2016, he was chosen for an even bigger role. He became the General Secretary of the party. This made him the most powerful leader in Laos.

Bounnhang Vorachit is married to Khammeung Vorachit. They have five children: three sons and two daughters. One of his daughters, Bounkham Vorachit, also became a member of the 11th LPRP Central Committee.

In 2021, at the 11th congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Bounnhang Vorachit stepped down from his leadership role. Thongloun Sisoulith took over as the new General Secretary.
