Who is Phankham Viphavanh?

Phankham Viphavanh was born in 1951 in what was then called the French Protectorate of Laos. He grew up to become a key figure in the government of Laos. His career involved many different roles, showing his dedication to public service.

Early Steps in Government

Phankham Viphavanh started his journey in government in the early 2000s. From 2003 to 2005, he worked in the prime minister's office. This was a good way for him to learn how the country's top leadership works.

In 2006, he became a member of the ruling party's central group. This group helps make big decisions for the country. After this, he became the governor of Houaphanh province. As governor, he was in charge of leading and managing that specific area of Laos.

Rising Through the Ranks

Phankham Viphavanh continued to gain more important roles. In 2011, he became an even higher leader within the ruling party. He then took on the job of Minister of Education and Sports. In this role, he was responsible for schools, learning, and sports programs across the country.

He also worked to build good relationships with other countries. He was the president of the Lao–Vietnam Friendship Association. This group helps keep strong ties between Laos and Vietnam.

In 2014, he became the Deputy Prime Minister. This meant he was one of the top assistants to the Prime Minister. Then, in April 2016, he was chosen to be the Vice President of Laos. This was a very high position, just below the President.

Becoming Prime Minister

Phankham Viphavanh reached the top of his political career in March 2021. The National Assembly of Laos, which is like the country's parliament, elected him as the Prime Minister of Laos. As Prime Minister, he was the head of the government. He was responsible for leading the country's day-to-day operations and making sure things ran smoothly.

He served as Prime Minister for almost two years. He retired from this important role in December 2022.
