Bounthong Chitmany (Lao: ບຸນທອງ ຈິດມະນີ; born 3 July 1948) is an important politician from Laos. He has been a Vice President of Laos since 2021. He shares this role with Pany Yathotou. Before becoming Vice President, he served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2016 to 2021.
Bounthong Chitmany has been a member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party since 1968. This is the main political party in Laos. He also fought in the Laotian Civil War. He is a key member of the party's central committee. He also led the party's Inspection Commission for a time.

Early Life and Background
Bounthong Chitmany was born on July 3, 1949. His birthplace was Bokeo province in what was then the French Protectorate of Laos. He belongs to the Lamet people, an ethnic group in Southeast Asia.
Political Journey and Roles
Chitmany began his involvement in the Laotian Civil War on September 9, 1965. He officially joined the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) on May 14, 1968. Over the years, he became a significant figure in the party. He was a member of the LPRP's central committee for its 9th and 10th terms.
Key Government Positions
On April 20, 2016, Bounthong Chitmany was chosen as the Deputy Prime Minister. This was part of the 8th Government of Laos. His role involved helping to lead the country's government.
On March 22, 2021, Chitmany was elected as a Vice President of Laos. This was a special moment in Laotian history. He was elected alongside Pany Yathotou, making it the first time two people held the Vice President position at once.
International Engagements
In 2024, Bounthong Chitmany traveled to Cuba as part of a state group. He held important discussions with Roberto Morales Ojeda, a Cuban official. He also led a group to the funeral of Nguyễn Phú Trọng on July 26, 2024. Nguyễn Phú Trọng was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In 2018, Chitmany led an investigation. This investigation looked into the collapse of a dam. The dam was at the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydropower plant.
