Pany Yathotou (Lao: ປານີ ຢາທໍ່ຕູ້; born 18 February 1951) is an important politician from Laos. She is a member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, which is the main political party in Laos.
Pany Yathotou has held many high-ranking positions in her country. She was the head of the Bank of the Lao P.D.R., which is like the main bank for the whole country, from 1988 to 1997. Later, she became the President of the National Assembly of Laos, which is similar to the leader of a country's parliament, from 2010 to 2021. She made history as the first woman to be elected as the Vice President of Laos. Pany Yathotou is also part of the Hmong ethnic group in Laos.

Early Life and Education
Pany Yathotou was born on 18 February 1951. Her birthplace was Xiangkhouang Province in Laos. Her father, Ya Tho Thu, was a Hmong military leader. He was part of the Pathet Lao, a political movement in Laos.
In 1959, when she was young, Pany Yathotou moved to North Vietnam. There, she went to primary and secondary school. She studied hard and in 1975, she earned a bachelor's degree in finance from Hanoi.
Starting Her Career
After finishing her studies, Pany Yathotou returned to Laos. In 1976, she began working at the Vientiane Foreign Trade Bank. She was the deputy director of the bank's budget department.
Soon after, in 1977, she joined the Bank of the Lao P.D.R.. She became the deputy director of the bank's training center. In 1978, she was made the deputy director of the foreign exchange bureau. She then became the director of this bureau in 1980.
Rising in Politics
In 1979, Pany Yathotou joined the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. This was an important step in her political journey. From 1982 to 1985, she held different director roles in economic planning and investment.
In 1986, she became the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Laos. She also joined the Party's Central Committee. This committee is a very important group within the political party. She served as the governor of the central bank two times.
Pany Yathotou continued to be re-elected to the Party Central Committee. In 1998, she joined the National Assembly. This is where laws are made for the country. She became a representative and worked on important committees. In 2002, she was promoted to Vice Chairman of the National Assembly.
In 2006, she made history again. She became the first woman to join the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee. She was also the first Hmong person to achieve this high position. She was re-elected as Vice President of the National Assembly.

In December 2010, Pany Yathotou became the President of the National Assembly of Laos. This made her the leader of the country's law-making body. She held this important role until March 2021. During this time, she was re-elected to the Party Central Committee and the Politburo.
In May 2014, Pany Yathotou and other officials were supposed to fly on a specific plane. However, they changed their plans at the last minute. This decision saved their lives, as the original plane later crashed, sadly killing most people on board.
Becoming Vice President
In March 2021, Pany Yathotou reached another major milestone. She and Bounthong Chitmany were elected as the Vice Presidents of Laos. This is a very high leadership position in the country. When she became Vice President, she stepped down from her role as President of the National Assembly.
