Pany Yathotou (born February 18, 1951) is an important politician from Laos. She is a member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.
She used to lead the Bank of the Lao P.D.R., which is Laos' main bank, from 1988 to 1997. Later, she joined the National Assembly in 1998. She was the President of the National Assembly from 2010 to 2021. Pany Yathotou is from the Hmong ethnic group in Laos. She made history as the first woman to become the Vice President of Laos.

Early Life and Education
Pany Yathotou was born on February 18, 1951, in Xiangkhouang Province, Laos. Her father, Ya Tho Thu, was a Hmong military leader. He was part of the Pathet Lao group.
In 1959, she moved to North Vietnam for her schooling. She finished her studies in 1975 with a degree in finance from Hanoi.
Political Career Highlights
After returning to Laos, Pany Yathotou started her career in banking. In 1976, she became a deputy director at the Vientiane Foreign Trade Bank. She then joined the Bank of the Lao P.D.R. in 1977. There, she held important roles like deputy director of the training center and foreign exchange bureau.
In 1979, she joined the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. By 1980, she was the director of the foreign exchange bureau. She also led economic planning and investment bureaus from 1982 to 1985.
Leading the Central Bank
In 1986, Pany Yathotou became the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Laos. She was also elected as a member of the Party's Central Committee. She served as the governor of the central bank twice. Her terms were from 1988 to 1992 and from 1995 to 1997.
Role in the National Assembly
Pany Yathotou was re-elected to the Party Central Committee several times. In 1998, she became a representative in the National Assembly. She was appointed to the Standing Committee and led the Nationalities Committee.
In 2002, she was re-elected and became the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly. In 2006, she made history again. She became the first woman and first Hmong person to join the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee.
President of the National Assembly
In December 2010, Pany Yathotou became the President of the National Assembly of Laos. She took over from Thongsing Thammavong. She was re-elected to this role in 2016.
In 2014, she was scheduled to travel on a plane that later crashed. However, she changed her plans at the last minute. This decision saved her life.
Becoming Vice President
In March 2021, Pany Yathotou was elected as one of the Vice Presidents of Laos. She was elected alongside Bounthong Chitmany. At this time, she stepped down as President of the National Assembly. Saysomphone Phomvihane took over her previous role.
