Discovering Bradford's Past
Bradford has a long and interesting history. Some records say the first settlers arrived between 1803 and 1805. These early settlers included James White and Robert Marshall.
However, an even earlier settler named Cornelius Bradford lived there before them. He passed away in 1790. Cornelius Bradford was a direct descendant of Governor William Bradford. Governor Bradford was a very important leader in the early Plymouth Colony.
Becoming a Town
Bradford was first set up as "Blakesburg Plantation" in 1820. A "plantation" was an early type of settlement in Maine. It officially became a town on March 12, 1831.
In the mid-1850s, Bradford's population grew quite a bit. It reached about 1,500 people. That's about 200 more people than live there today!
A Powerful Storm
In 1872, a strong tornado hit Bradford. It destroyed two houses in the town. Buildings in nearby towns like Parkman and Dover were also damaged by the storm.
