Brandon Jacobs grew up in Napoleonville, Louisiana. His mother and aunts raised him. Later, his aunt and uncle became his legal guardians. He did not have a relationship with his father.
Brandon played both basketball and football at Assumption High School. In his final year, he was a top player. USA Today named him an All-American. He ran for over 3,000 yards and scored 38 touchdowns that season.
College Football Journey
Starting at Coffeyville
Jacobs began his college career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. In his first year (2001), he ran for 1,349 yards. He also scored 17 touchdowns. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In his second year, he ran for 1,896 yards. He scored 20 touchdowns. This amazing effort earned him a JUCO All-American title. He was again named the team MVP. His 1,896 rushing yards are the second-highest in the school's history.
Time with Auburn
After Coffeyville, Jacobs went to Auburn University. He played alongside future first-round draft picks. These included Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown. Jacobs was the third-string running back. In 2003, he gained 446 yards and scored 2 touchdowns.
Playing for Southern Illinois
After Auburn, Jacobs moved to Southern Illinois. He had a strong year there. He led the team with 992 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was named an All-American first-team player. He also led his conference in scoring.
Professional NFL Career
Joining the New York Giants
The New York Giants picked Brandon Jacobs in the 2005 NFL draft. He was the 110th player chosen overall. He was considered one of the best running backs available.
For the 2006 season, Jacobs worked to improve his running style. He studied videos of famous power running back Eddie George. In 2006, Jacobs ran for 423 yards and scored nine touchdowns.
After Tiki Barber retired, Jacobs became the Giants' main running back in 2007. He had a knee injury early in the season. But he came back strong. He rushed for 100 yards in his return game. He finished the season with 1,009 rushing yards. The Giants went on to win Super Bowl XLII. Jacobs started every playoff game.
In 2008, Jacobs had wrist surgery. He still played well that season. He rushed for 1,089 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. He and teammate Derrick Ward both rushed for over 1,000 yards. They were one of only five pairs of teammates to do this.
Jacobs was known as "Earth" in the Giants' running back group. The group was nicknamed "Earth, Wind, & Fire." His teammates were Derrick Ward ("Wind") and Ahmad Bradshaw ("Fire"). He was also called "Juggernaut." This was because he was so hard to tackle due to his size.
In 2009, Jacobs signed a four-year, $25 million contract with the Giants. He carried the ball most often that season. However, he was placed on injured reserve in December due to a knee injury.
In 2010, Jacobs was fined $10,000 for throwing his helmet. Later that year, he was named the Giants' number one running back again.
At the end of the 2011 season, Jacobs and the Giants played in Super Bowl XLVI. He rushed for 37 yards. The Giants beat the New England Patriots 21–17. The Giants released Jacobs in March 2012.
Time with the San Francisco 49ers
Jacobs signed with the San Francisco 49ers in March 2012. He missed the first two months of the season with a knee injury. When he returned, he played very little. He had only five carries for seven yards.
The 49ers suspended him for the last three games. This was because he posted on social media about not playing. He said he was "rotting away" on the team. The 49ers let him go in December 2012.
Back with the Giants
Jacobs signed a one-year contract to return to the New York Giants in September 2013. He played in 7 games. He rushed for 238 yards and 4 touchdowns. On January 2, 2014, Jacobs announced he was retiring from football. He played for nine seasons.
In May 2021, Jacobs announced on Twitter he wanted to return to the NFL. He said he would try to play as a defensive end. He asked for "one chance."
