Professional Football Career
Playing for the Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks chose Brandon Mebane in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was the 85th player picked overall. In July 2007, he signed a four-year contract with the team.
In his first year, Mebane played in all 16 games. He made 29 tackles and had two sacks. The next year, 2008, was also good for him. He played all 16 games again. He recorded 39 tackles and 5.5 sacks. In 2009, he started 15 games. He had 49 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In 2010, he started the first four games. But he got a calf injury and missed the next four games.
Mebane was a key player in the middle of the Seahawks' defense. He helped the team's defense become very strong in 2013-2014. This defense was known as the "Legion of Boom." They had one of the best seasons in NFL history. The Seahawks went on to win Super Bowl XLVIII against the Denver Broncos. They won with a score of 43-8. Mebane was one of only a few players who were on the team before their coach, Pete Carroll, joined.
His teammate, Richard Sherman, once said about Mebane: "He's a very skilled player in how he moves. He's almost always in the right spot. You rarely see a defensive tackle running to make tackles on the side of the field. He does all that. But he's often not noticed because he doesn't get a lot of sacks. He just does his job incredibly well every week."
Mebane was a solid anchor for the "Legion of Boom" defense. He helped make it one of the best defenses ever.
Playing for the Chargers
On March 9, 2016, Brandon Mebane signed a three-year contract. He joined the San Diego Chargers.
In September 2016, Mebane was chosen as one of the team captains. This meant he was a leader for the Chargers. However, he got a torn bicep injury in November 2016. This injury meant he had to stop playing for the rest of the season.
In March 2019, Mebane signed another two-year contract with the Chargers. The team later moved and became the Los Angeles Chargers.
He was released by the Chargers in March 2020. On November 20, 2020, Brandon Mebane announced that he was retiring from professional football.
