The Story of Braum's
The Braum family had been in the ice cream business for a long time. In 1957, William Henry "Bill" Braum bought his family's ice cream business. It was located in Emporia, Kansas. He also bought their "Peter Pan" ice cream stores.
Ten years later, the Peter Pan stores were sold. There was a special rule: the Braum family could not sell ice cream in Kansas for ten years. Bill Braum still owned the family dairy farm and the ice cream making business.
So, in 1968, Bill Braum and his wife Mary started the Braum's chain. They opened 24 stores in Oklahoma during their first year. For a few years, Braum's brought products from Kansas to Oklahoma. Then, in 1975, they opened new facilities in Oklahoma. They also moved their dairy cows there.
Where You Can Find Braum's Stores
Braum's wants to keep its products super fresh. Because of this, they only open stores close to their main farm. This farm is in Tuttle, Oklahoma. All Braum's stores are within about 300 miles (483 km) of this farm.
As of 2024, there are over 300 Braum's stores. You can find 128 stores in Oklahoma. Texas has 99 stores, and Kansas has 27. There are also 13 stores in both Arkansas and Missouri.
What Braum's Sells
Braum's restaurants offer many tasty items. They serve delicious ice cream and frozen yogurt. You can also get hamburgers, sandwiches, and salads. They even have breakfast items!
Many Braum's stores also have a special grocery section. It's called the "Fresh Market." Here, you can buy dairy products like milk and cheese. They also sell fresh baked goods, drinks, and frozen meals. You can even find meats and fresh fruits and vegetables.
How Braum's Makes Its Products
Braum's is special because it makes almost all its own food. This is called "vertical integration." Braum's owns its own:
- Feed mill (where food for cows is made)
- Dairy herd (their own cows!)
- Dairy processing plant (where milk is made into products)
- Bakery (for fresh bread and treats)
- Stores (where they sell everything)
- Delivery trucks (to bring products to stores)
Braum's also owns eight farms and ranches. These cover a huge area of about 40,000 acres (162 square kilometers). Their main dairy farm is in Tuttle, Oklahoma. You can even take tours of this farm at certain times. It's a popular place for school field trips! Braum's says it's the only big ice cream maker that still milks its own cows. They even make the containers for their dairy products.
Special A2 Milk
Braum's Family Farm has the largest group of A2 milk cows in the United States. Milk has different types of protein. A1 and A2 are two types of a protein called beta-casein. Most cow milk has A1 protein. But milk from other animals, like goats or camels, is mostly A2. Even human milk is mostly A2.
Some people find A2 milk easier to digest. It might help with certain "cow milk protein allergies," including lactose intolerance. It took Braum's over 12 years to build their A2 cow herd. Now, Braum's only produces A2 milk to sell in its stores.
