The Brearley School is a private school just for girls in New York City. You can find it in the Upper East Side part of Manhattan. The school has different sections for students of all ages. There's the Lower School for kindergarten to 4th grade. The Middle School is for grades 5 to 8. And the Upper School is for grades 9 to 12. Each grade usually has about 50 to 60 students. Brearley is also a "sister school" to the all-boys Collegiate School and the all-girls Chapin School. This means they sometimes share after-school programs and classes.

School History

The Brearley School was started in 1884 by Samuel A. Brearley. He was the head of the school until 1886. After him, James G. Croswell led the school until 1915. Since 1926, women have been in charge of Brearley. The first woman head was Millicent Carey McIntosh.

In December 2011, Jane Foley Fried became the 15th head of school. She took over from Stephanie J. Hull.

Brearley's Locations

Over the years, Brearley has moved to different places. In the early 1900s, it moved from East 45th Street to West 44th Street. Then, in 1912, it moved to Park Avenue and East 61st Street. That's when the primary school program was added.

In 1929, the school moved to a new building at 610 East 83rd Street. More recently, in Fall 2019, Brearley opened another new building. This one is at 590 East 83rd Street, just one block away. The school plans to update the 610 building during the summer breaks. The younger students mostly use the 590 building. The middle and upper school students are mainly in the 610 building. However, older students often move between both buildings for different classes, especially science classes.

What Students Learn

Brearley's learning plan is based on the liberal arts. This means students learn a wide range of subjects. There are about 6 students for every teacher. This helps students get lots of personal attention.

Language Classes

Students can learn many different languages. These include Ancient Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

Technology at School

The school has two computer labs for students to use. One lab is for the Lower School. The other is for the Middle and Upper Schools. There are also smaller computer rooms for students to work in. Plus, there are laptops available for use in the library and classrooms.

Students in 7th and 8th grades get iPads for the school year. These help them with their schoolwork and homework. High school students are asked to bring their own devices. This could be a laptop or an iPad.

School Rankings

Brearley is known as a top school. In 2008, The Wall Street Journal ranked it as the second-best school in the country. This was based on where its students went to college.

In 2013, Forbes magazine called it the second-best prep school in the U.S. They also said it was the best all-girls school. A survey from 2019–20 found that Brearley was the second-best girls' school in the country. It was also ranked as the fifth-best private school for all grades (K-12).

Student Life

As of 2019, about 724 students attended Brearley from kindergarten to 12th grade. About half of the students were students of color. This shows the school's diverse community.

In 2018–19, the tuition was $49,680. However, about 20% of students received financial help. The school provided $6.1 million for this assistance.

Sports and Athletics

Brearley has a special building for sports called the "Field House." It's located on East 87th Street. This building has places for physical education and many athletics. Students can play track, soccer, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, lacrosse, and field hockey.

The school also uses other sports places. These include Randall's Island and Asphalt Green. Brearley has varsity teams in 13 different sports. The school's team colors are red and white. Their fun mascot is a beaver.
