Early Life and Schooling
Brendon Small was born in Illinois in 1975 and moved to California when he was a child. He started learning to play the guitar when he was 14 years old. A kid in his neighborhood taught him about music and how to play.
During his first time performing for an audience, his hands shook so much that he found it hard to play the guitar. It took him about ten more years to feel comfortable playing in front of people. He went to Palma High School in Salinas, California, and later graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1997. While studying music, he also took writing and comedy classes at Emerson College.
Career in Entertainment
Television and Animation
Small's career took off when he was performing stand-up comedy. A producer named Loren Bouchard saw him and thought he would be perfect for a new animated show. Together, Small and Bouchard created Home Movies.
The show first aired on the UPN network before moving to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. It ran for four seasons from 1999 to 2004. In the show, Small voiced the main character, an eight-year-old filmmaker also named Brendon Small. He also voiced many other characters and wrote all the music for the show.
After Home Movies, Small worked on another hit show called Metalocalypse. He co-created the series, which ran from 2006 to 2013. The show is about a fictional melodic death metal band called Dethklok. Small not only wrote and directed for the show, but he also voiced three of the five band members: Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Pickles, and Nathan Explosion.
Small has also provided his voice for other animated shows. He was a voice actor in The Venture Bros. and had small roles in shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies.
Music Career
Music has always been a big part of Small's work. He wrote all the songs for Home Movies and later released them on a CD.
His work on Metalocalypse led to the creation of the real-life band Dethklok. Small writes all the music and performs with professional musicians like Gene Hoglan. Their first album, The Dethalbum, was a huge success. It reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 chart, which was the highest a death metal album had ever reached at the time.
The band has released several more albums, including Dethalbum II, which did even better by reaching number 15 on the charts. Dethklok has also toured across the United States, performing for large crowds.
In 2012, Small released his first solo album, Brendon Small's Galaktikon. He described it as a "high-stakes, intergalactic, extreme rock album." It has a style similar to Dethklok but with more rock elements. He released a second solo album, Brendon Small's Galaktikon II, in 2017.
Comedy and Other Projects
Small started his career in stand-up comedy and still performs when he has time. He often does character comedy, where he acts as a funny character he has created. One of his well-known characters is Captain Moustache.
He has also been involved in many other projects. He directed music videos for bands like Soundgarden and The Damned Things. He has also been a host and judge for the Guitar Superstar competition.
Small has also worked with guitar companies like Gibson and Epiphone to design his own signature guitars. These include the "Thunderhorse" Explorer and the "Snow Falcon" Flying V, which are modeled after the guitars used by the characters in Metalocalypse.
Personal Life
Brendon Small lives in Los Angeles. He is married to interior designer Courtney Bates. He is of Lithuanian heritage.
