Early Life and Education
Brendon Small was born in Illinois in 1975. He moved to California when he was a child. Small started learning to play the guitar at age 14. A neighbor taught him about music and the guitar.
His first time performing in public was a bit shaky. His hands shook a lot, making it hard to play. It took him ten more years to feel comfortable performing for an audience. He finished high school at Palma School in Salinas, California.
In 1997, he graduated from Berklee College of Music. While studying music, he also took classes in writing and comedy. After college, he felt that rock music was not as popular. So, he decided to try being a stand-up comedian.
His Creative Work
TV Shows and Animation
Brendon Small was performing comedy when Loren Bouchard saw him. Bouchard was looking for someone to voice a character for a new TV show. This show became Home Movies. Small and Bouchard worked together to create the animated series.
Home Movies first aired on the UPN network. Later, it moved to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The show ran for four seasons, from 1999 to 2004. Small helped write the show and voiced the main character, Brendon Small. He also created the show's theme music and many other songs.
Small also lent his voice to other animated shows. He was Chad in Hey Monie! on BET. He voiced many characters in The Venture Bros.. He also had small roles in Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies.
In 2006, Small co-created Metalocalypse for Adult Swim. This show was about a fictional melodic death metal band called Dethklok. Small helped write, direct, and produce the series. He also voiced three of the band members: Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Pickles, and Nathan Explosion. Each episode of Metalocalypse featured a new song by Dethklok. The show ran for four seasons and had a special episode in 2013.
Small also directed music videos for bands like Soundgarden and The Damned Things.
Comedy Performances
Brendon Small has often performed stand-up comedy. He started in Boston and later moved to Los Angeles. He was one of the hosts of The Tomorrow Show, a live comedy show.
He is known for his "character comedy." This is where he acts as different characters he created. Some of these characters include Captain Moustache and Victor Diamond. Even though he is busy with music and TV, he still performs comedy sometimes. Small says he is inspired by comedians like Monty Python and Woody Allen.
Music Projects
Brendon Small wrote all the music for Home Movies. He later released these songs on a special CD.
He also wrote all the music for Metalocalypse. In 2007, he finished the first Dethklok album, The Dethalbum. He worked with drummer Gene Hoglan to make it sound like real melodic death metal. The album was very successful, reaching No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart.
After the album, Small and other musicians toured as Dethklok. They performed at colleges and with other metal bands. Their second album, Dethalbum II, came out in 2009. It did even better, reaching No. 15 on the Billboard 200.
Small has also played guitar on songs for other artists. He contributed to albums by Exodus and Brian Posehn. He also helped design two signature guitars for Gibson and Epiphone. These guitars were based on the ones used by characters in Metalocalypse.
In 2012, Small released his first solo album, Brendon Small's Galaktikon. He described it as an "intergalactic, extreme rock album." It featured the same musicians he worked with for Dethklok. He released a second solo album, Brendon Small's Galaktikon II, in 2017.
Small continued to release Dethklok albums. Dethalbum III came out in 2012. In 2013, he released The Doomstar Requiem, which was the soundtrack to the Metalocalypse TV special. He also released "Ghosthorse," a new song, in 2021.
