Early Life and Education
Brian Baumgartner was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He went to The Westminster Schools, where he graduated in 1991. Interestingly, this was just one year before his future co-star from The Office, Ed Helms, also graduated from the same school.
In high school, Baumgartner was active in drama and competed in speech events. He was so good that he reached the national finals in his senior year. He also spent a summer studying theater at Northwestern University. After high school, he went to Southern Methodist University and earned a degree in theater in 1995.
After college, Baumgartner moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Hidden Theatre. He won several awards for his acting and directing there. He also performed at other famous theaters, including the Guthrie Theater and Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
Career
Before his big break, Baumgartner had small roles in TV shows like Arrested Development and Everwood. He also appeared in the movie License to Wed with his The Office co-star John Krasinski.
The Office and Kevin Malone
Baumgartner's most famous role is Kevin Malone in the American version of The Office. The show is a mockumentary (a fake documentary) about the daily lives of employees at a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. Kevin Malone is a slow-talking but kind-hearted accountant who is known for his simple mistakes and love of food.
The show was a huge success, and Baumgartner became a fan favorite. He won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2007 for the web series The Office: The Accountants, sharing the award with his co-stars Angela Kinsey and Oscar Nunez.
Because the show is still so popular, Baumgartner started a podcast in 2020 called An Oral History of The Office. In the podcast, he interviewed his former co-stars to share behind-the-scenes stories. He later created another podcast, The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner, which features longer interviews with the cast and crew.
Other Roles
After The Office ended, Baumgartner continued to act in both movies and television. He had starring roles in the films Into Temptation (2009) and Electric Jesus (2020).
He is also a talented voice actor. He voiced the character Walter in the animated Netflix show Trash Truck from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, he voiced the character Klonk in the animated movie Rumble. He has also had guest roles on many popular TV shows, including The Goldbergs, Chicago Fire, and Criminal Minds.
