Early Life and Baseball Dreams
Brian Cashman was born in Rockville Centre, New York, and grew up in Washingtonville, New York. He was one of five children in his family. From a young age, he loved baseball. He even attended a summer camp hosted by famous baseball player Bucky Dent. Brian was a big fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. When he visited his grandmother in Florida, he got to be a batboy for the Dodgers during their spring training in 1982. This happened with help from a family friend, former Dodger Ralph Branca.
His family later moved to Lexington, Kentucky. Brian went to Lexington Catholic High School and then Georgetown Preparatory School in Maryland. He played baseball and junior varsity basketball at both schools. He also played football in his senior year.
Cashman played college baseball at The Catholic University of America. He was a four-year starter at second base and the team's leadoff hitter. He earned a college degree in history in 1989.
Working for the New York Yankees
Brian Cashman's journey with the New York Yankees began in 1986. The Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, was friends with Brian's father. This connection helped Brian get an internship with the team. He worked in the minor league scouting department during the day and security at night. After college, the Yankees offered him a full-time job as a baseball operations assistant.
In 1990, George Steinbrenner was temporarily banned from baseball. Gene Michael, who was the Yankees' general manager, took over running the team. Cashman played an important role in helping him. Brian was promoted to assistant farm director that year, and then to major league administrator in 1991. Michael made Cashman an assistant general manager in 1992. He stayed in this role when Bob Watson became general manager in 1995. The Yankees won the 1996 World Series during this time.
Becoming General Manager (1998–Present)
Winning Championships (1998–2005)
In February 1998, Bob Watson left the Yankees, and Brian Cashman was named senior vice-president and general manager. He was one of the youngest general managers in MLB history. The Yankees had an amazing year in 1998, winning 114 games and the 1998 World Series.
Cashman continued to make smart moves. In 1999, he traded popular player David Wells to get star pitcher Roger Clemens. The next year, he brought in David Justice, who was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2000 American League Championship Series. The Yankees then won the 2000 World Series. This made Cashman the first general manager to win three World Series titles in his first three years! In 2004, Cashman made another big trade, getting Alex Rodriguez for Alfonso Soriano.
Even with all this success, Cashman thought about leaving the Yankees in 2005. He had some disagreements with owner George Steinbrenner. However, Cashman decided to stay after getting a new contract that gave him more power over team decisions.
Another World Series Win (2006–2009)
With more authority, Cashman created a new department for scouting professional players. He signed a new contract in 2008 to stay with the Yankees through 2011. After the 2008 season, when the Yankees missed the playoffs, Cashman signed several key players like CC Sabathia, A. J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira. He also traded for Nick Swisher. These players were a big part of the 2009 New York Yankees season, which ended with a victory in the 2009 World Series.
Building for the Future (2010–2016)
The Yankees made the playoffs again in 2010 but lost to the Texas Rangers. After the 2010 season, Cashman had tough contract talks with star player Derek Jeter. Even though there were disagreements, a deal was eventually made.
In 2013, Cashman had some disagreements with Alex Rodriguez about his health updates. Cashman also wanted to trade Robinson Canó during the 2013 season, but the team's ownership decided against it.
After the 2013 season, the Yankees signed several big players, including Masahiro Tanaka, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, and Carlos Beltrán. However, the Yankees missed the playoffs for two years in a row. In 2014, Cashman signed another three-year deal. He then focused on making the Yankees roster younger. He brought in players like Didi Gregorius and Nathan Eovaldi. In 2016, he made trades to get promising young players for the Yankees' future. He traded Carlos Beltrán, Andrew Miller, and Aroldis Chapman.
The "Baby Bombers" Era (2017–Present)
In 2017, the Yankees made it to the postseason with exciting young players like Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. They won their first two playoff series before losing to the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. Many people were surprised by how well the Yankees did. After the season, Cashman suggested that the team needed a new manager. Baseball America named Cashman their Executive of the Year for 2017.
In December 2017, Cashman made a big trade, getting star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins. A few days later, he signed a new five-year contract to stay with the Yankees.
In 2018, Cashman and the Yankees won 100 games. They won their Wild Card game but lost to the Boston Red Sox in the Division Series. On April 7, 2019, Cashman won his 2,000th game as the Yankees general manager.
The 2019 season saw the Yankees win 103 games, even though many players were injured. In the shorter 2020 season, the Yankees made the playoffs again. They won their first series but lost to the Tampa Bay Rays.
In 2021, the Yankees won 92 games. Cashman traded for Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo to help the team's offense. The team had a 13-game winning streak, their longest since 1961. They made it to the Wild Card Game but lost to the Red Sox.
In 2022, the Yankees finished with 99 wins and won their division. Star player Aaron Judge broke Roger Maris's American League record by hitting 62 home runs. The Yankees won their first playoff series but were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. During this season, Cashman became the longest-serving general manager in Yankees history.
On December 5, 2022, the Yankees re-signed Cashman to a four-year contract. Two days later, they also re-signed Aaron Judge to a huge contract. The 2023 season was tougher for the team, as they missed the playoffs. However, in 2024, the Yankees won their division again. They made it to the 2024 World Series for the first time since 2009, but they lost to the Dodgers.
