Washingtonville is a small village located in the town of Blooming Grove, Orange County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 5,657 people lived there. It is part of a larger group of cities and towns in the New York metropolitan area. The village was named to honor George Washington, who was the first president of the United States.

History of Washingtonville

The Moffat Library, a historic building, was a gift to the town from David Moffat.

Early Beginnings and First Settlers

Washingtonville was first settled in 1731. The village grew slowly but steadily in the late 1700s. Before it was called Washingtonville, it was known as "Matthews Field." This name came from Vincent Matthews, who bought the land in 1721. He was the first European settler in the area. The earliest known person to live there was an Indigenous person named Moringamus.

In 1809, a shoemaker named John Jaques opened his shop in the small settlement. At that time, it had only nine houses and was called "Little York." Later, in 1839, John Jaques started Brotherhood Winery. This winery is still open today and is the oldest one in the United States that has been running without stopping.

Naming the Village and Growth

In 1811, Samuel Moffat built a trading post in the village center. His son, David, later gave money to build the Moffat Library on the same spot. The village began to do well with businesses like a tannery and mills for grinding grain.

People needed a place to stay, so Samuel Moffat built the Washington Tavern in 1818. In the same year, Samuel Moffat and John Jaques decided to rename the village "Washingtonville." They chose this name to honor George Washington. It is said that George Washington once stopped in the village to water his horse.

Village Development in the 1800s

Washingtonville grew even more after 1850. This was when the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railway built its train line through the village. Washingtonville officially became a village in 1895.

It became an important place for dairy farming. There were two creameries, which processed milk. One was Borden's, and the other was the Farmers Cooperative Market. Many other businesses also thrived, including grocery stores, a bank, and shops that made wagons and furniture. The biggest growth happened in the 1870s and 1880s.

C.R. Shons opened a cooperative on Depot Street and had a large fruit orchard. Thomas Fulton's mill, which ground grain, was destroyed by fire in the early 1900s. Hugh Lunney had a slaughterhouse and a large ice house. He would cut ice from a pond in the winter for businesses to use.

Borden's Creamery had a bottling plant. Their refrigerated train cars, filled with milk, were sent to other towns. This company also cut its own ice from a small pond to keep their products cold.

Geography and Location

Washingtonville covers an area of about 2.54 square miles (6.57 square kilometers). The village is built on both sides of Moodna Creek. This creek flows into the Hudson River. Sometimes, the creek can flood the area. There are also three small lakes in the village, but they do not have official names.

The village is located where two main roads meet: NY-94 and NY-208.
