Discover Bridgend: A Village on Islay
Bridgend gets its name from a bridge over the River Sorn. This bridge is a very important part of the village. It is even listed as a Category B building, which means it has special historical or architectural importance.
Important Roads Meet Here
Bridgend is a key spot on Islay because two of the island's main roads meet right here. These roads are the A846 and the A847. They connect different parts of the island.
The A846 road goes through Bridgend. It travels between Port Askaig, which is a ferry port, and Ardbeg. The A847 road starts in Bridgend and goes all the way to Portnahaven.
Historic Buildings in Bridgend
Bridgend is home to some interesting historic buildings.

The Old Bank Building
In 1838, the National Bank of Scotland opened a branch in Bridgend. It was managed by Duncan McAlister, who was a merchant and also the postmaster. The building where this bank was located was built in 1838. It is also a Category B listed building, just like the bridge. This means it's an important part of the village's heritage.
