Portnahaven (which means "river port" in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village. You can find it on Islay, an island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. This charming village is located within the Kilchoman parish.

Where is Portnahaven?
Portnahaven is at the very southern tip of a part of Islay called the Rinns of Islay. The A847 road follows the coast from Portnahaven. It connects the village to Port Charlotte and Bridgend.
Harbour and Nearby Islands
The village's harbour is a safe place for boats. It is protected by the small island of Orsay. There is also an even smaller island nearby called Eilean Mhic Coinnich. The Rinns of Islay lighthouse is on Orsay. It was built by Stevenson. The village of Port Wemyss is located just south of Portnahaven. Another nearby settlement is the village of Nerabus.
A Look Back in Time
Portnahaven was started by Walter Campbell of Shawfield. He bought the Sunderland estate in 1788. His son, Captain Walter Campbell, helped develop the village more in the 1820s.
Portnahaven Parish Church
The Portnahaven Parish Church was built in 1828. It was designed by Thomas Telford and William Thomson. This church is a type known as a Telford Parliamentary church.

In 1991, about 150 people lived in Portnahaven. The village has a few important places for its residents.

The harbour is a great place to see grey seals up close. They often swim and rest in the waters around the village.

North of Portnahaven, in an area called Claddach, you can find something very special. This is where the world's first working wave power machine is located.
The Islay LIMPET
This machine is called the "Islay LIMPET". It was built by a company called Wavegen. The Islay LIMPET started working in the year 2000. It uses the power of ocean waves to create electricity.
