Britt is a small city in Hancock County, Iowa, in the United States. It's famous for being the home of the National Hobo Convention and the Hobo Museum. In 2020, about 2,044 people lived there.

Britt's Story: A Look Back

Britt started to grow when a train depot was built there in 1870. Train tracks were laid from east to west, bringing new connections. The first train line was the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul. Later, the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern line also passed through. Today, the Canadian Pacific Railway still uses these tracks, mostly to carry grain.

The city of Britt was officially planned out in 1878. People believe it was named after a railroad engineer or a brakeman. Britt became an official city on June 23, 1881.

The National Hobo Convention

Since 1900, Britt has been the meeting place for the National Hobo Convention. This special event celebrates the history and way of life of hobos. Hobos were people who traveled around looking for work, often by riding trains. The convention includes fun activities like contests, craft shows, shared meals, and a parade.
