Long ago, even before the year 1800, two people named William and Joel Woodward settled in this area. The place was first called Woodward's Crossroads.
In 1833, the county government decided to move its offices here from Augusta. This was because Woodward's Crossing was more in the center of the county. It officially became the county seat on February 16, 1839.
A Senator named David Brooks helped make this happen. So, the town was renamed Brooksville in his honor. Since 1970, the number of people living in Brooksville has stayed about the same.
