The brown four-eyed opossum (Metachirus nudicaudatus) is a type of marsupial found in the forests of Central and South America. Unlike some other marsupials, it doesn't have a pouch to carry its young.

You can find these opossums from Nicaragua all the way down to Brazil and northern Argentina. They live in many different forest areas, from sea level up to about 1,500 meters high. Scientists believe there might be different kinds of this opossum, even though it's currently seen as one species. You won't find too many of them in one place, and they are rare in some parts of Central America.

About the Brown Four-Eyed Opossum

The brown four-eyed opossum is an animal that is active at night, which means it is nocturnal. It prefers to live alone and spends most of its time on the ground. This opossum eats many different things, making it an omnivorous animal.

What Do They Eat?

These opossums enjoy a varied diet. They often eat fruits and small creatures like vertebrates (such as tiny birds or reptiles) and invertebrates (like insects, crayfish, and snails). They seem to especially love munching on insects.

Where Do They Live and How?

Brown four-eyed opossums build their nests using leaves and twigs. You can find these nests in tree branches or tucked away under rocks and logs. Female opossums can have babies at certain times of the year, and they usually have between one and nine young at a time.

Special Features

The brown four-eyed opossum gets its name from the two white spots above its eyes. These spots make it look like it has four eyes! Its tail is also quite special. It's scaly and longer than its body.
