Browns Point is a small community in Washington state, United States. It is located in Pierce County, right next to the city of Tacoma. The Puget Sound surrounds it on most sides. In 2010, about 1,198 people lived there. Sometimes, the nearby part of Tacoma is also called "Browns Point" or "Northeast Tacoma".

Where is Browns Point Located?

The History of Browns Point
Browns Point was not always called by its current name. It was first named Point Harris. This name honored Alvin Harris, who was a sailmaker on the Wilkes Expedition. Later, the people living there decided to rename it. They chose "Browns Point" after an early landowner in the area.
Community Life and Culture
Browns Point is known for its historic Browns Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse first lit up on December 12, 1887. While it used to have people working there all the time, it is now fully automatic.
The community is supported by the Browns Point Improvement Club. This club owns much of the land near the lighthouse. The club is famous in the Pacific Northwest for its special event. This event is called the Browns Point Salmon Bake.
The Browns Point Salmon Bake
The Salmon Bake started in the 1940s. It was created by Jerry Meeker, a pioneer from Browns Point and a member of the Puyallup tribe. This festival happens every two years. You can usually find it on the first weekend of August in even-numbered years. It is a popular event that brings the community together.
Education in Browns Point
Students in Browns Point attend schools managed by Tacoma Public Schools. This is a public school district. Children living in the area typically go to Browns Point Elementary School. After elementary school, they attend Meeker Middle School. For high school, students go to Stadium High School.
