History of Brownsville
Early Days and Naming
Brownsville was first called "Calapooya." This name came from the Kalapuya Native American tribe who lived in the area. It was also known as "Kirk's Ferry" because Alexander and Sarah Kirk ran a ferry across the Calapooia River.
In 1847, when Linn County was created, Calapooya was chosen as the county seat. This meant it was the main town where the county government was located. The first county courthouse was in the Spaulding School in Brownsville. The city was later named after Hugh L. Brown. He moved there in 1846 and opened the first store.
In 1851, the main government office for the county moved to Albany. People voted in 1856 to keep Albany as the county seat.
Brownsville and the Movie Stand by Me
In the mid-1980s, Brownsville became famous around the world. This happened because the movie Stand by Me was filmed there. The movie was directed by Rob Reiner.
Filming took place in Brownsville in June and July of 1985. The movie came out in theaters in August 1986. About 100 local people from Brownsville were in the movie as extras.
To remember this special event, the town started "Stand by Me Day." The first celebration was on July 23, 2007. This date was chosen so it wouldn't conflict with other local events. About 2,000 visitors came to Brownsville for the first celebration.
The town has held "Stand by Me Day" every year since then. The only exception was in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2016, for the movie's 30th anniversary, they added a "Ray Brower Memorial 5K Walk/Run." This event is named after a character in the film.
