Early Life and First Jobs
Bruce Cabot was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico. His father was a well-known local lawyer, Étienne de Pelissier Bujac Sr. Bruce's mother, Julia Armandine Graves, sadly passed away shortly after he was born. His father had served in the United States Army before settling in Carlsbad.
Bruce went to Sewanee Military Academy and finished in 1921. He then briefly attended the University of the South but left before graduating.
Before becoming an actor, Bruce Cabot had many different jobs. He worked as a sailor, sold insurance, worked in oil fields, and was a surveyor. He also sold cars, managed real estate, and even worked at a slaughterhouse. He was also a prize fighter for a time.
His acting career began after he met film producer David O. Selznick at a party in Hollywood. Bruce said he auditioned by acting out a scene from a play called Chicago. He thought his audition was "awful," but it still led to him getting a role in the movie The Roadhouse Murder (1932).
