How Bruegger's Started

Bruegger's was started in 1983. Two friends, Nordahl Brue and Mike Dressell, opened the first store. It was in Troy, New York.

A company called Quality Dining bought Bruegger's in 1996. But the founders, Brue and Dressell, were not happy. They felt the company was not growing well. So, in 1997, they bought Bruegger's back. Brue later said selling the company the first time was his "biggest mistake."

In 2003, James J. Greco and Sun Capital Partners bought the company from the founders. Bruegger's main office is in Burlington, Vermont.

In 2009, Bruegger's bought other restaurant chains. These included Timothy's World Coffee, mmmuffins, and Michel's Baguette. They bought them through a company called ThreeCaf Brands Canada, Inc. Bruegger's planned to keep all these brands running.

Later, in 2011, a French company called Groupe Le Duff bought Bruegger's. They wanted to add some French style to Bruegger's restaurants. The first Bruegger's in Europe opened in France in 2013.

In 2017, Bruegger's was sold again. This time, JAB Holding Company bought it. After this, Bruegger's closed about 30 locations, mostly in the eastern U.S. In 2018, ThreeCaf Brands sold Timothy's World Coffee and mmmuffins to another Canadian company.

World's Largest Bagel

On August 27, 2004, Bruegger's made history. They created the world's largest bagel! This huge bagel still holds the Guinness World Record.

The bagel weighed 868 pounds. It needed 1,100 pounds of dough and 900 gallons of water to make. It took 10 hours to bake! The giant bagel was cooked at the New York State Fair. It was then sliced and given to people watching. They were asked to donate money to help local food banks.
