History of Brushy Creek
The area around Brushy Creek was first settled around 1840. It was near the towns of Frankston and Montalba. In 1873, settlers from South Carolina arrived after a long journey. They named the community Bushy Creek. A post office was set up that same year.
Early Growth and Industries
People aren't sure if the name came from the nearby Brushy Creek or from a settler named Charles Murphy, who was from South Carolina. By 1884, the community had three churches. It also had steam-powered gins and gristmills. These mills processed grain. Farmers shipped grain and livestock into the community. About 300 people lived there at this time.
In 1890, a sawmill was built. The population was 100 people. There were also two coal mines operating just west of Brushy Creek. By 1900, the population grew to 131. A year later, a Masonic lodge was formed. Telephone service started in 1914.
Changes Over Time
From 1925 to 1948, the population stayed around 100. The post office closed in 1925. In the 1930s and 1940s, Brushy Creek had two churches, a few businesses, and several homes. The community lost many people in the late 1940s and 1950s.
However, in the early 1960s, several oilfields were found nearby. This helped the community grow again. The population jumped to 200 residents by 1964. This growth was temporary. By 1970, the population dropped to 70. It stayed around this number until 1988. In 1982, there were two churches, Pisgah church and Brushy Creek church, plus several homes. Both churches were still there in 1985. In both 1990 and 2000, the population was 50.
The Anderson Camp Ground in Brushy Creek is a historic site. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
