The Bryn Mawr Historic District is a special area in the Edgewater neighborhood of northern Chicago, Illinois. It sits right by Lake Michigan. This district stretches along Bryn Mawr Avenue, between Broadway and Sheridan Road.

It's known for its beautiful old buildings and unique charm. You'll find famous places like the Belle Shore Apartment Hotel, Bryn Mawr Apartment Hotel, and the Edgewater Beach Apartments here. The district also includes the Manor House and part of Lincoln Park.

When you walk through the Bryn Mawr Historic District, you'll see old-fashioned green streetlights. These lights look just like the ones from Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s. Green banners with gold letters also hang, celebrating the area's important history. The Chicago City Council officially made it a historic district because it has many important Chicago Landmark sites.

The name "Bryn Mawr" comes from the Welsh words for "big hill." It was chosen in the 1880s by John Lewis Cochran, who developed the Edgewater area. He named it after a train station near Philadelphia.

Famous Buildings in Bryn Mawr

The Bryn Mawr Historic District is home to several buildings that tell stories about Chicago's past. These buildings show different styles of architecture from many years ago.

Bryn Mawr & Belle Shore Apartment Hotels

These two impressive buildings were built between 1928 and 1929. They show how fast Chicago grew in the 1920s. They also highlight the growth of businesses along Bryn Mawr Avenue.

The buildings are directly across the street from each other. Both use a lot of fancy terracotta for decoration. The Bryn Mawr building is 12 stories tall and covered in white terracotta. It has a Gothic Revival style, which looks like old European castles. The Belle Shore building is 8 stories tall. It features rich green and cream terracotta with Art Deco designs, which were popular in the 1920s.

These two hotels were named Chicago Landmarks on November 6, 2002.

Manor House

The Manor House was built in 1907. It was designed by John Edmund Oldaker Pridmore. This residential complex is built in the Tudor Revival style. This style makes it look like old English homes.

The building has two parts that are exactly the same on each side. Each side has a large round tower called a turret. The Manor House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the country.

Edgewater Beach Apartments

This building was completed in 1928. It was originally an extension of a very fancy hotel called the Edgewater Beach Hotel. The hotel was once a popular spot for famous people and wealthy visitors.

However, a new road, Lake Shore Drive, was built. This road cut the hotel off from the beach. Because of this, the main hotel building was later taken down. The Edgewater Beach Apartments building still stands. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Renaissance

This building is 17 stories tall. It was built in a Renaissance Revival style. This style brings back ideas from the Renaissance period in Europe. It was designed as apartments for wealthy people.

Like many other important buildings in the district, The Renaissance is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
