Buchfelde is a suburb located just north of Adelaide in South Australia. It is now part of the larger town of Gawler, South Australia.

Buchfelde's Past: A Look at Its History

Buchfelde has an interesting history, especially with its name changes. The area was first settled in 1848. Two brothers, Dr. Richard von Schomburgk and Otto von Schomburgk, started a property here. They named the place Buchfelde to honor Leopold von Buch. He was a kind person who helped them leave Germany.

During a time of war in 1918, many Australian place names that sounded German were changed. Buchfelde's name was changed to Loos. This new name came from a town in France where a big battle happened in 1915. The change was made to remove names that seemed linked to the "enemy" during the war.

However, in November 1990, the name was changed back to Buchfelde. This brought back the original name and its history.

Exploring Buchfelde: Geography and Landmarks

The boundaries of Buchfelde were officially set in June 2011. These borders were decided after a major road, the Northern Expressway, was built.

Today, Buchfelde is bordered by the Gawler River to the south. The Northern Expressway runs along its west and north sides. To the east, you'll find the Gawler Bypass Road. The Two Wells Road also runs right through the middle of the suburb.

Buchfelde is home to the northern part of the Stuart O'Grady Bikeway. This popular bike path runs next to the Northern Expressway. You can also find the Gawler trotting track here, where horses race while pulling a driver in a cart.

The suburb also has two old cemeteries. The Pioneer cemetery is where Otto von Schomburgk, one of the first settlers, is buried. The Roediger Memorial cemetery is connected to a former church called St Paul's Lutheran Church. This church was built in 1863 after the first chapel burned down. The church later closed and was eventually taken down.
