Bucklesham is a small village in Suffolk, England. It's located in the East Suffolk area, just a short distance east of the larger town of Ipswich. A "civil parish" is like a local area with its own small government.

A Look Back in Time

The name Bucklesham comes from an old English phrase. It means "Buccel's homestead" or "Buccel's village." This tells us the village has been around for a very long time!

Bucklesham in the Domesday Book

Bucklesham is even mentioned in the famous Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. It recorded who owned land and what was on it. In 1086, Bucklesham had 36 households. Most of these were "freeholders," meaning they owned their own land.

A Ship Named Bucklesham

The village also gave its name to a ship! HMS Bucklesham was a special kind of ship called a Ham-class minesweeper. Minesweepers are designed to find and remove dangerous underwater mines. You can even find the ship's bell inside the village's primary school!

What's in Bucklesham?

Bucklesham has several important places for its residents. These include a school, a church, and a village hall. The village hall is shared with the nearby area of Foxhall.

The Village Pub

The local pub is called The Shannon. It's named after a ship called HMS Shannon (1806). This ship was commanded by Rear Admiral Philip Broke, a famous naval officer.

Bucklesham School

A small building called Shell Cottage, near St Mary's church, used to be the old school. If you look closely, you might still see the names of children written on its walls! The newer school in Bucklesham is quite small, with about 15 students in each year group. In total, it has around 100 students.

Playing Field Fun

The village also has a playing field. This is a great spot for children to play and for the local football team to practice. The field has swings, an obstacle course, and some basic gym equipment for everyone to enjoy.

Famous People from Bucklesham

Some interesting people have lived in or been connected to Bucklesham.

Basil Brown, Archaeologist

One famous resident was Basil Brown. He was an archaeologist and an astronomer. In 1939, he made an amazing discovery. He found and dug up a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon ship burial at a place called Sutton Hoo. This was a huge find that taught us a lot about early English history!
