Budi Karya Sumadi, born on December 18, 1956, is an Indonesian architect. He served as the Minister of Transportation for Indonesia under President Joko Widodo. He held this important role from 2016 until 2024.

Early Life and Education
Budi Karya Sumadi was born in Palembang, South Sumatra, on December 18, 1956. His father worked for the government, and his mother was a kindergarten teacher. She was also part of South Sumatra's local council for a few years.
Budi finished his schooling in Palembang. After that, he moved to Yogyakarta to study architecture. He attended Gadjah Mada University and graduated in 1981. He is married and has one child.
Professional Journey
After finishing university, Budi Karya Sumadi started his career in 1982. He worked as an architect for PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol Tbk. This company was owned by the city government of Jakarta. He worked there for 22 years, moving up to become the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) in 2004.
Later, he moved to another Jakarta-owned company, PT Jakarta Propertindo. He was the CEO there until 2015. During his time at these companies, he helped develop housing and building projects in Jakarta. This included working on the Bintaro Jaya area and building affordable homes.
In 2015, Budi Karya Sumadi joined Angkasa Pura II. This is a company owned by the central government that manages airports in western Indonesia. As the CEO of Angkasa Pura II, he led the project to develop Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Terminal 3. He also had some disagreements with the Transport Minister at the time, Ignasius Jonan, about the readiness of Terminal 3 for opening.
Becoming a Minister
On July 27, 2016, Budi Karya Sumadi was chosen to be the Minister of Transportation. He took over from Ignasius Jonan during a change in the government's cabinet.
As Minister, he worked on rules for online transportation companies. These included popular services like Go-Jek, Grab, and Uber. He made rules about how drivers and vehicles should be licensed. In 2018, he also required Go-Jek and Grab to officially register as transport businesses.
After the Lion Air flight 610 crash in October 2018, Minister Sumadi took action. He suspended Lion Air's technical director. He also reviewed airfare prices, especially for budget airlines. He promised that the airline would face consequences after the investigation was complete. He had previously warned Lion Air in 2017 to improve its safety and schedules after some minor incidents.
Hobbies and Health
Budi Karya Sumadi enjoys playing table tennis as a hobby. He mentioned that he plays for 15 to 30 minutes every morning. He also plays in a band with other government ministers. The band is called Elek Yo Band. In the band, he plays the acoustic guitar and sings.
In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, he became sick with COVID-19. A few days later, the government announced that his health was getting better.
