Where is Bulverde Located?

Bulverde is in the western part of Comal County. It is about 26 miles (42 km) north of downtown San Antonio. U.S. Route 281 runs through the east side of the city. This road goes south to San Antonio and north to Blanco.

Cibolo Creek flows just south of Bulverde. This creek forms the border between Comal County and Bexar County. The city covers a total area of about 15.83 square miles (41.01 km²). Only a very small part of this area is water.

Bulverde's History

Early Inhabitants

The first people in the Bulverde area were Native Americans. They made a special type of arrowhead called the Bulverde Point. This arrowhead style is named after the area where these Native Americans lived. They used these arrowheads between 2,500 and 600 BCE.

Settlement and Naming

Bulverde is sometimes called the "Front Porch of the Texas Hill Country." It was settled in 1850 by German immigrants. The town was first named Pieper Settlement after Anton Pieper, a German pioneer. This was similar to how nearby New Braunfels was settled.

For many years, the closest post office was in Smithson Valley. Mail was delivered only once a week to Carl Koch's house in Bulverde. Later, a local post office opened in 1879. It was named after Luciano Bulverdo, who owned land in the area a long time ago. This post office operated until 1919.

Becoming a City

Between 1996 and 1999, five different towns in the Bulverde area joined together. They formed the city of Bulverde as it is today. This process took 22 separate elections to complete. In May 2015, the people of Bulverde voted to adopt a "home-rule charter." This gave them more control over how their city would grow and develop.
