History of Bundaberg West
Bundaberg West has a rich history, especially with its schools and hospitals.
Early Buildings and Schools
The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd was officially opened in 1962. It was later made a sacred place in 1971.
Bundaberg West State School first opened its doors on January 25, 1926. It has been teaching students for many years.
St Patrick's Catholic Primary School was blessed and opened on August 23, 1936. This happened thanks to Bishop Romuald Denis Hayes. The school started teaching in January 1937 with fewer than 40 students. It was run by the Sisters of Mercy, led by Sister Mary Liam.
The Mater Private Hospital
In 1941, the Sisters of Mercy bought a house called Brabourne. They turned it into St Mary's Hostel for women and girls.
After World War II, doctors wanted better hospital facilities in Bundaberg. So, the Sisters changed the hostel into the Mater Private Hospital. It opened on July 28, 1946. The hospital had 24 beds, an operating room, and places for nurses to live.
At first, only nuns worked as nurses. But soon, they started a training school for other women to become nurses. Over the years, the hospital grew. It added more beds, operating rooms, X-ray services, and a special ward just for children.
The Mater Private Hospital was known for being advanced. It was the first hospital in Queensland to use a special eye microscope. It was also the first regional hospital in Queensland to have a clinic for lymphoedema. This is a condition that causes swelling.
