History of Burlington
Burlington was started in 1857. It got its name from Burlington, Vermont. One of the people who founded the city came from there.
The first post office in Burlington opened in 1858. It moved from a nearby town called Hampden, which no longer exists.
The city's population grew a lot between 1977 and 1985. This happened when the Wolf Creek Generating Station was being built.

Economy
Wolf Creek Power Plant
The Wolf Creek Generating Station is just northeast of Burlington. It is the only nuclear power plant in Kansas. This plant uses nuclear energy to make electricity.
The plant is located on Coffey County Lake. This lake was built to help cool the power plant. Wolf Creek has been making electricity since 1985. It is an important local landmark.
The plant is run by Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation. This company is owned by several energy companies. These include Westar Energy, Kansas City Power & Light, and KEPCO.
Education in Burlington
Burlington has its own public school district, called Burlington USD 244. There are three schools for students:
- Burlington High School
- Burlington Middle School
- Burlington Elementary School
Students and adults can also take classes at Burlington High School through Allen County Community College. High school students can even earn college credits while still in high school.
The city also has the Burlington branch of the Coffey County Library. This library helps the community with books and information. There is also a building called the Burlington Carnegie Free Library. It used to be a library but is now used as an office space.

- Christian Braun – A basketball player who played for the University of Kansas and now plays for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA.
- Harrison Kelley (1836–1897) – He was a U.S. Representative for Kansas.
- Tyrel Reed – A former professional basketball player who also played college basketball for the University of Kansas.
