History of Burrel
The area around Burrel has been home to people for a very long time. Scientists have found signs that people lived here even in the Paleolithic era, which was the early Stone Age. The valley of the Mat River has been populated throughout all of history. In ancient times, different Illyrian tribes lived here. Later, around the second century BC, the region became part of the Roman Empire.
A very famous person from Burrel was Ahmet Zogu. He was born in 1895 and later became the first King of the Albanians, known as King Zog I. He ruled from 1928 to 1939. Before becoming king, he was also the Prime Minister of Albania and the President of Albania.
Burrel was once known as the "city of apples." This was because many streets in the town were lined with apple trees. However, during the time of the Communist government and the changes that followed, many of these apple trees were cut down. People used them for firewood or sold them. Today, there are hardly any apple trees left in the town.
During the Communist era in Albania, Burrel was a town known for its mines. Most of these mines have now closed. However, a factory that produces ferrochrome, a type of metal, is still working near Burrel.
During the Kosovo conflict in the late 1990s, a refugee camp was set up near Burrel. This camp provided shelter for about 2,000 people who needed help. They received food, water, and other supplies from NATO and the United States Armed Forces.
Burrel Prison
Burrel was once home to a prison that held many people during the Communist time. Some of these prisoners were ordinary criminals, while others were held for speaking out against the government. One famous person held there was Pjetër Arbnori. He was in prison for over 28 years and became known as "the Mandela of the Balkans" because he spent so long in jail.
After the Communist government ended, the prison was closed and turned into a museum. However, in 1997, it was reopened and is now an active prison again.
Archaeology in Mat
The region of Mati, where Burrel is located, is like a big outdoor museum for archaeology. It is a very important place for studying the ancient Illyrian culture. Many objects have been found here that show how people lived and developed over thousands of years.
The Museum of Mat is a great place to see many artifacts from the Illyrian culture. These items help us understand the history of the region. A researcher named Dilaver Kurti explored many of these objects. He also traveled to different villages to collect old traditions and photographs. These collections are now part of his books.
Sports in Burrel
Burrel has a football (soccer) club called Klubi Sportiv Burreli, or KS Burreli. The team was started in 1952. Their home stadium is called Liri Ballabani Stadium, which can hold about 3,000 fans. KS Burreli plays in the Albanian First Division, which is one of the top football leagues in Albania.
