Byrd D. Crudup (September 15, 1897 – March 12, 1960) was an important American sports figure. He was a coach for both American football and basketball. He also worked as a sports leader at colleges.
Crudup was the head football coach at several schools. These included North Carolina College for Negroes (now North Carolina Central University) from 1929 to 1931. He also coached at Dillard University from 1935 to 1940. Later, he coached at Johnson C. Smith University from 1946 to 1949. He was also the head basketball coach at North Carolina Central for one season. This was during 1927–28.

Byrd D. Crudup was born in Edenton, North Carolina. His birthday was September 15, 1897. His parents were Byrd and Delia Stark Crudup.
He went to Rindge Manual Training School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After high school, Crudup played college football at Lincoln University (Pennsylvania). He was a talented player.
Playing Football at Lincoln
Crudup was named to the All-Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) team. This happened in both 1923 and 1924. He was also the captain of the 1924 Lincoln Lions football team.
That team had a great season. They won the CIAA championship. They also earned a black college football national championship.
Education and Further Studies
Crudup finished his studies at Lincoln University in 1925. He earned an A.B. degree there. Later, he continued his education.
He received a Master of Education degree from Boston University in 1939. He also took more classes at Boston University. He even studied at Harvard University.
Coaching and Sports Leadership
Byrd Crudup had a long career in college sports. He coached football at three different universities. He also coached basketball for a short time.
He was also an athletic administrator. This means he helped manage the sports programs at colleges. He worked in this role at Dillard and Johnson C. Smith.

Crudup coached the North Carolina College Eagles football team. He led them for three seasons. Then he moved to Dillard University.
At Dillard, he coached the Bleu Devils football team. He was their coach from 1935 to 1940. His last coaching job was at Johnson C. Smith University. He coached the Golden Bulls from 1946 to 1949.
