Byrganym Saryqyzy Aitimova (Kazakh: Бірғаным Сарықызы Әйтімова, born on February 26, 1953) is a well-known politician and diplomat from Kazakhstan. She has held many important roles in her country's government. These roles include being a member of the Senate of Kazakhstan, a Deputy Prime Minister, and a Minister of Education and Science. She also served as an ambassador for Kazakhstan to several countries and the United Nations.

Early Life and School

Byrganym Aitimova was born in 1953 in a village called Bakushino, which is now known as Aqjol. This village is in the West Kazakhstan Region. She went to the A.S. Pushkin Oral Pedagogical Institute. There, she studied to become an English language teacher. Later, in 1994, she also earned a law degree from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Starting Her Career

After finishing her first degree in 1974, Aitimova started working as a teacher. She taught at a secondary school in the West Kazakhstan Region. From 1976 to 1979, she was a secretary for the Komsomol Committee of a state farm. The Komsomol was a youth organization in the Soviet Union. She also led different departments within the Oral Regional Committee of the Young Communist League of Kazakhstan.

In 1979, she became the First Secretary of the Oral City Committee of the Komsomol. Then, in 1981, she became the First Secretary of the Oral Regional Committee. From 1983 to 1987, Aitimova worked as a secretary for the Central Committee of the Komsomol. After that, she became the deputy head of the Kazakh branch of the Lenin Soviet Children's Fund.

Working in Government and Diplomacy

Becoming a Minister

From 1990 to 1993, Byrganym Aitimova was a member of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan. This was an important part of the government. During this time, she led the Committee for Youth Affairs. On December 17, 1993, President Nursultan Nazarbayev chose her to be the Minister of Youth, Tourism, and Sports. She held this position until January 24, 1996. Then, she was appointed as a member of the new Senate of Kazakhstan.

Later that same year, on October 16, 1996, Aitimova became Kazakhstan's ambassador to Israel. An ambassador is a high-ranking diplomat who represents their country in another country.

Serving as an Ambassador

On August 7, 2002, Aitimova was appointed as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Italy. She worked in Italy until May 14, 2004. At that time, she was appointed as a Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan in Daniyal Akhmetov's government.

From December 13, 2004, Aitimova served as the Minister of Education and Science. She held this role until January 10, 2007. The next month, on February 9, 2007, she became Kazakhstan's Representative to the United Nations (UN). The UN is an international organization that works for peace and cooperation. From May 16, 2007, she also served as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Cuba.

Returning to the Senate

On August 26, 2013, Byrganym Aitimova was no longer the Representative to the UN or the ambassador to Cuba and the Solomon Islands. Instead, she was appointed as a Senator in Kazakhstan. She worked in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Defense, and Security starting October 17, 2014. From September 19, 2016, she led the Committee on Social and Cultural Development and Science.

On August 12, 2019, her term in the Senate ended. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev officially dismissed her. Aitimova accepted this decision, saying she was thankful for the chance to work in her career. After leaving the Senate, she thought about going into business. However, on October 1, 2019, she was chosen as the deputy chair of the Council of Senators. This is a group where current and former senators share ideas and work to improve how the government works.

Her Family

Byrganym Aitimova is married to Nurlan Bek-Alievich Abdullaev. They have two children: a son named Saken, born in 1971, and a daughter named Sabina, born in 1989.
