Byrganym Saryqyzy Aitimova (Kazakh: Бірғаным Сарықызы Әйтімова, born 26 February 1953) is an important figure from Kazakhstan. She has worked as a politician and a diplomat. This means she has held roles in her country's government and represented Kazakhstan in other countries.

She was a member of the Senate of Kazakhstan, which is like a part of the country's parliament. She served there from 2013 to 2019 and also in 1996. Byrganym Aitimova also worked as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the United Nations (UN). An ambassador represents their country in another country or at an international organization. She was also an ambassador to Cuba and the Solomon Islands at the same time, from 2007 to 2013.

Before becoming an ambassador, she held high positions in the government. She was the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from 2004 to 2005. After that, she became the Minister of Education and Science until 2007. She also served as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Italy (2002-2004) and to Israel (1996-2002).

Early Life and Education

Byrganym Aitimova was born in 1953 in a village called Bakushino. This village is now known as Aqjol in the West Kazakhstan Region.

She studied English at the A.S. Pushkin Oral Pedagogical Institute. Later, in 1994, she earned a law degree from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Starting Her Career

After finishing her first degree in 1974, she began working as a teacher. She taught at a secondary school in the West Kazakhstan Region.

From 1976 to 1979, she was involved with the Komsomol. This was a youth organization in the Soviet Union. She held several leadership roles within the Komsomol.

Political and Diplomatic Work

Byrganym Aitimova started her political career in 1990. She became a member of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan. This was a top government body. She led the Committee for Youth Affairs there until 1993.

In December 1993, President Nursultan Nazarbayev appointed her as the Minister of Youth, Tourism, and Sports. She held this role for a few years. In January 1996, she was appointed to the newly formed Senate of Kazakhstan.

Later that year, in October 1996, she became Kazakhstan's ambassador to Israel. An ambassador represents their country's interests abroad.

In August 2002, she was appointed as the Kazakh Ambassador to Italy. She worked there until May 2004. Then, she was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. This is a very senior position in the government.

From December 2004, she served as the Minister of Education and Science. She held this important role until January 2007.

In February 2007, she became Kazakhstan's Representative to the United Nations (UN). The UN is an international organization that works for peace and cooperation. She also became an ambassador to Cuba in May 2007.

In August 2013, she left her ambassador roles. She was then appointed as a Senator again. She worked on committees dealing with foreign relations, defense, and security. She also chaired the Committee on Social and Cultural Development and Science.

Her term as a Senator ended in August 2019. After leaving the Senate, she became the deputy chair of the Council of Senators. This group helps current and former senators share ideas and work on improving the parliament.

Family Life

Byrganym Aitimova is married to Nurlan Bek-Alievich Abdullaev. They have two children, a son named Saken (born in 1971) and a daughter named Sabina (born in 1989).
