What is a Munro?

In Scotland, a "Munro" is a mountain that is over 3,000 feet (or 914.4 meters) high. Càrn Liath, at 976 meters, is one of these special mountains! There are 282 Munros in Scotland, and climbing them all is a popular challenge for hikers, known as "Munro Bagging." Càrn Liath is also a "Marilyn," which is a hill with a drop of at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) on all sides.

Climbing Càrn Liath

Many people start their climb of Càrn Liath from a nearby place called Loch Moraig. From there, you can choose to climb just Càrn Liath. It's known as the most accessible of the three Munros in the Beinn a' Ghlò area, meaning it's often the easiest to reach. Some hikers also choose to climb Càrn Liath as part of a longer journey across the entire Beinn a' Ghlò massif. You might notice some visible wear and tear on its slopes from all the people who have climbed it over the years.
