Jean Maurice Jules Cabut (born January 13, 1938 – died January 7, 2015), known as Cabu, was a famous French cartoonist and caricaturist. He was well-known for his funny and often thought-provoking drawings. Cabu was a regular cartoonist and part-owner at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper. He sadly passed away during an attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in January 2015.
Cabu's Career as a Cartoonist
Cabu began his art studies at the École Estienne in Paris. His first drawings were published in a local newspaper when he was just 16 years old, in 1954.
He was later called to join the army for over two years during the Algerian War. Even in the army, his drawing skills were used in the army magazine Bled and in Paris Match. His time in the military made him strongly against war and gave him a slightly rebellious view of society.
After leaving the army in 1960, Cabu helped start Hara-Kiri magazine. In the 1970s and 1980s, he became a very popular artist. He even worked on a children's TV show called Récré A2, creating drawings for younger audiences. At the same time, he continued to draw political cartoons for famous newspapers like Charlie Hebdo and Le Canard enchaîné.
From September 2006 to January 2007, an art show called Cabu and Paris was held at the Paris city hall. This exhibition celebrated his work and connection to the city.
Cabu's Passing
Cabu was killed on January 7, 2015, during the tragic Charlie Hebdo shooting. This happened when gunmen attacked the newspaper's offices in Paris. Seven of his co-workers, two police officers, and two other people also died in the attack.
To honor his memory, an asteroid was named 320880 Cabu on June 5, 2016. It was discovered by Jean-Claude Merlin.
Cabu's Personal Life
Cabu was the father of the French singer and songwriter Mano Solo (born April 24, 1963 – died January 10, 2010).
He is remembered by his family. His tombstone has a special message in the Occitan language that says, "the man who gave every moment a shot..."
Cabu's Works
Cabu created many popular comic books and series throughout his career. One of his most famous series was Le grand Duduche. He also created other well-known works like Mon beauf and Le journal de Catherine. His drawings often made people think and laugh.
