The Cadbury Creme Egg is a popular chocolate treat shaped like an egg. It has a thick chocolate shell filled with a sweet, gooey white and yellow cream. This cream looks a lot like the white and yolk of a real soft-boiled egg!
This yummy chocolate egg was first made by a British company called Fry's in 1963. It was originally called "Fry's Creme Egg." Later, in 1971, Cadbury took over and renamed it the "Cadbury Creme Egg."
Today, Cadbury makes these eggs in the United Kingdom. In the United States, they are made by The Hershey Company. In Canada, they are made by Cadbury Adams.

The Sweet History of Creme Eggs
Chocolate eggs with fillings have been around for a long time. Cadbury Brothers first made filled eggs way back in 1923.
However, the Creme Egg we know and love today first appeared in 1963. It started as "Fry's Creme Eggs" before becoming "Cadbury Creme Eggs" in 1971.
What's Inside a Creme Egg?
Cadbury Creme Eggs are made in two chocolate halves. Each half is filled with a sweet white cream called fondant. This fondant is made from sugar, glucose syrup, and dried egg white.
A smaller amount of the same cream, colored yellow with paprika, is added on top. This makes it look like the yolk and white of a real egg! The two halves are then quickly joined together and cooled. This makes the chocolate shell stick. Finally, the eggs are wrapped in colorful foil.
You might notice that Creme Eggs sold in different countries can be slightly different. For example, American Creme Eggs used to be a bit smaller than those in the UK.
In 2015, Cadbury in the UK changed the chocolate recipe for Creme Eggs. They switched from their famous Dairy Milk chocolate to a different cocoa mix. This change made many fans unhappy. Sales of Creme Eggs in the UK actually dropped a lot after this change.
Making and Selling Creme Eggs
Creme Eggs are a huge hit, especially around Easter! In the UK, Cadbury makes about 1.5 million Creme Eggs every single day at their factory in Birmingham.
They are sold all over the world. In the UK, Creme Eggs are the best-selling treat between New Year's Day and Easter. Over 200 million eggs are sold each year!
The foil wrappers used to be pink, blue, purple, and yellow in the UK and Ireland. Now, they are mostly pink, purple, and yellow. In Canada, the packaging is a soft plastic shell that is purple, red, and yellow.
Creme Eggs are usually only available from New Year's Day until Easter Sunday. Cadbury tried selling them all year round in the 1980s, but sales went down. So, they went back to being a special seasonal treat.
In 2018, Cadbury even released white chocolate Creme Eggs! These were mixed in with the regular eggs. If you found one, you could win money!
Fun Advertising for Creme Eggs
Cadbury has created many memorable ads for Creme Eggs. In the UK and Ireland, they often ask, "How do you eat yours?" This makes people think about their favorite way to enjoy the egg.
In the US, the ads feature a cute white rabbit called the Cadbury Bunny. This bunny clucks like a chicken, which is quite funny! Other animals dressed with bunny ears have also appeared in the ads.
Cadbury has even made special "Creme Egg Cars." These are oval-shaped vehicles painted to look just like Creme Eggs! They drive around to advertise the eggs, especially near the Cadbury factory in Bournville.
Around 2008, there was a fun stop-motion ad campaign called "Here Today, Goo Tomorrow." These ads showed Creme Eggs trying to break their own shells to release their gooey centers. They would make "goo" sounds as they did it!
Creme Egg Cafes and Camps
In 2016, Cadbury opened a special "Crème de la Creme Egg Café" in London. It was a pop-up café where fans could enjoy different Creme Egg treats. Tickets sold out super fast!
Later, in 2018, Cadbury opened a "Creme Egg Camp." This was another fun pop-up event for fans to experience the world of Creme Eggs.
