The Cadbury Creme Egg is a popular chocolate treat shaped like an egg. It was first made by a company called Fry's in 1963. Later, in 1971, it became known as the Cadbury Creme Egg. This yummy chocolate egg has a thick chocolate shell. Inside, it's filled with a sweet, gooey white and yellow fondant. This filling looks just like the white and yolk of a real soft-boiled egg!
Cadbury makes these eggs in the United Kingdom. In the United States, another company called The Hershey Company makes them under a special agreement. In Canada, Cadbury's parent company, Mondelez International, produces them. Creme Eggs used to be made in New Zealand, but now they are imported from the UK.

The Sweet History of Creme Eggs
Chocolate eggs with fillings were first made by the Cadbury Brothers way back in 1923. However, the Creme Egg we know today first appeared in 1963. It was initially called Fry's Creme Egg. Then, in 1971, it got its famous name: Cadbury's Creme Egg.
What's Inside a Creme Egg?
Cadbury Creme Eggs are made in two chocolate halves. Each half is filled with a white, creamy fondant. This fondant is made from sugar, glucose syrup, and other sweet ingredients. A smaller amount of the same mixture, colored yellow with paprika, is added on top. This makes it look like the yolk and white of a real egg.
The two halves are then quickly joined together and cooled. This process makes the chocolate shell stick firmly. Once they are solid, the eggs are taken out of their molds and wrapped in colorful foil.
In 2015, Cadbury in the UK changed the recipe for the Creme Egg. They used a different kind of chocolate instead of their usual Cadbury Dairy Milk. They also reduced the number of eggs in a pack from six to five. Many people were not happy about these changes. Reports showed that Cadbury's Creme Egg sales in the UK dropped by a lot after this.
How Creme Eggs Are Made and Sold
Creme Eggs are made by Cadbury in the UK. The Hershey Company makes them in the United States. In Canada, Cadbury Adams produces them. Mondelez International sells them in most places, except for the US.
At the Bournville factory in Birmingham, UK, they make a huge number of Creme Eggs. They produce about 1.5 million eggs every single day! The Creme Egg is one of the most famous sweets in the UK.
Around 2011, the Creme Egg was the best-selling sweet treat in the UK between New Year's Day and Easter. They sold over 200 million eggs each year. However, after the recipe change in 2015, sales went down.
Creme Eggs are sold individually or in boxes. The number of eggs in a box can be different depending on the country. The foil wrapping used to be pink, blue, purple, and yellow with a chick design in the UK and Ireland. Later, green and the chick were removed, and purple replaced blue. In the US, the design includes some green and used to feature the Creme Egg Chick mascot. As of 2015, the packaging in Canada changed to a soft plastic shell that is purple, red, and yellow.
Creme Eggs are only available for a limited time each year. You can usually find them between New Year's Day and Easter Sunday. In the 1980s, Cadbury tried selling them all year round in the UK, but sales dropped. So, they went back to being a special seasonal treat.
In 2018, Cadbury released white chocolate Creme Eggs. These special eggs were mixed in with the regular ones. If you found a white chocolate egg, you could win money by finding a code inside the wrapper!
Creme Eggs were made in New Zealand from 1983 to 2009. After that, they started importing them from the UK. This change meant fewer types of Creme Eggs were available in New Zealand. Also, the size of the eggs changed slightly. Many New Zealanders were not happy, saying the filling wasn't as runny as the ones made locally. As of 2024, Cadbury Australia still makes the Mini Creme Egg.
Fun Advertising for Creme Eggs
In the UK and Ireland, Creme Eggs have been advertised with the fun question: "How do you eat yours?" In New Zealand, the slogan was "Don't get caught with egg on your face."
In the US, Creme Eggs are advertised on TV with a cute white rabbit called the Cadbury Bunny. This bunny makes clucking sounds like a chicken! Other animals dressed with bunny ears have also been used in these ads. In 2021, a tree frog named Betty became the newest Cadbury Bunny.
In the UK, there are even "Creme Egg Cars." These are special oval-shaped vehicles painted to look like Creme Eggs. They drive around to advertise the eggs and are often seen near the Cadbury factory in Bournville.
For a few years, around 2008-2010, the advertising campaign was called "Here Today, Goo Tomorrow." These ads used stop-motion animation to show Creme Eggs breaking open to release their gooey centers. The eggs would make "goo" sounds and a "relieved" sound when they finally broke open.
Creme Egg Café
In 2016, Cadbury opened a special pop-up café in London called "Crème de la Creme Egg Café." Tickets to visit this café sold out very quickly! It was open for a short time in early 2016.
Creme Egg Camp
In 2018, Cadbury opened another fun pop-up event called "Creme Egg Camp." This camp was open from January to February 2018.
