Caesars Head State Park is a cool park in northern Greenville County, South Carolina. It's right next to Transylvania County, North Carolina. You can get there by driving on US 276.

The park is famous for a huge rock called Caesars Head. This rock is one of the highest spots in Greenville County. It's a giant granite rock sticking out of the ground. It sits about 3,208 feet (978 meters) above sea level. This means it's super high up! The rock is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It looks down over the lower Piedmont area. People aren't totally sure how the rock got its name. Some say it was named after an early explorer's dog. Caesars Head State Park and Jones Gap State Park are managed together. They are part of a bigger area called the Mountain Bridge Wilderness.

Park History: A Summer Escape

People have enjoyed Caesars Head for a long time. Back in 1825, a smart engineer named Robert Mills saw the rock. He said it was a "mass of granite" that looked like it might fall over.

In 1848, a road was built nearby. A former state senator, Benjamin Hagood, bought a lot of land around Caesars Head. He built a summer house there. Later, he even built a hotel! People loved to visit because of the cool breezes and amazing views. The hotel closed in 1862.

After Hagood passed away, his daughter and her husband, Dr. Francis Miles, took over. They ran the hotel as a health resort. People came to relax and enjoy the mountain air.

Over the years, the hotel was sold a few times. It got bigger and added more cottages. Even during the Great Depression, the hotel kept going. In 1946, two brothers, Pete and Tom Marchant, bought the property. They added fun things like tennis courts and a swimming pool. Sadly, the hotel and other buildings burned down in 1954. The state of South Carolina bought the land for the park between 1976 and 1986.
