Calabazas is a special area, like a neighborhood, located in the town of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 7,675 people lived there. It's a part of Puerto Rico, which is an island in the Caribbean Sea.

History of Calabazas

Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rules as a state.

In 1899, the U.S. government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,891 people lived in the Calabazas area at that time. Later, more people moved to Calabazas. The population grew to 7,675 by 2010.
