Caldron Linn, also called Cauldron Linn or Star Falls, is a waterfall on the Snake River. You can find it in southern Idaho, across Jerome County and Twin Falls County. This beautiful waterfall is about 25 feet tall!

A Historic Journey to the Pacific

Caldron Linn played an important part in an early American expedition. In 1811, a group called the Pacific Fur Company was exploring. They were trying to find a way to the Pacific Ocean.

The Overland Party's Challenge

This group, known as the Overland Party, was led by a man named Wilson Price Hunt. They tried to travel down the Snake River by canoe. It was a very difficult journey.

They had already lost one person to the river's strong currents. Then, they reached Caldron Linn. The waterfall's powerful, churning water was too dangerous.

Changing Plans at the Falls

The sight of Caldron Linn made the explorers change their minds. They realized they could not continue down the river safely. So, they decided to leave their canoes behind.

From that point, they continued their journey to the Pacific Ocean by walking over land. This shows how challenging early explorations were!

How Caldron Linn Got Its Name

The waterfall was most likely named by a Scottish member of the expedition. There is another waterfall in Scotland with the exact same name, Cauldron Linn. It's interesting how places can share names across the world!

A Place of Historical Importance

Caldron Linn is located east of Murtaugh and south of Hazelton. Because of its role in the historic expedition, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.
