A Look Back in Time
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Counting the People in Callabo
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Callabo and a nearby community called Jacaguas was 936 people.
