Jacaguas is a small community, also called a barrio, located in the town of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States. In 2010, about 3,957 people lived in Jacaguas.
History of Jacaguas
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is governed by the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Jacaguas and another nearby community called Callabo was 936 people. Over the years, the population of Jacaguas has changed, as shown in the table below.
