Camarones is a small area in Chile, known as a commune. It is located in the Arica y Parinacota Region. A commune is like a local district or county. Camarones is part of the Arica Province.

The main office for Camarones is in the town of Cuyo. Cuyo is right next to Chile Highway 5. It's a place where travelers can stop and rest. The other important towns in Camarones are Codpa and Caleta Camarones. Caleta Camarones is a small fishing village with only about 44 people. Codpa is the biggest town in the commune. It is about 114 kilometres (71 mi) from the city of Arica.

Camarones is mostly a rural area, meaning it has many farms and open spaces. It doesn't have much tourism. It is also special because it is home to the only Afro-Chilean community in Chile.

In 2002, a study called a census counted the people living in Camarones. It found that 1,220 people lived there. Most of these people lived in rural areas. The population grew by 39% between 1992 and 2002. This means more people moved to or were born in Camarones during that time.

How Camarones is Governed

Local Government

Camarones is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Ivan Martin Romero Menacho.

National Representation

The people of Camarones also have representatives in Chile's national government. These representatives speak for them in the country's parliament.

  • Chamber of Deputies: This is like one part of the parliament. Camarones is part of the 1st electoral district. This district includes the whole Arica and Parinacota Region. Mr. Nino Baltolu and Mr. Orlando Vargas represent this area.
  • Senate: This is the other part of the parliament. Camarones is in the 1st senatorial constituency. This area includes the Arica and Parinacota Region and the Tarapacá Region. José Miguel Insulza and José Durana are the senators for this area.
